Hello and thank you.

We have a 1990 - 60 HP Johnson; J60TLESM. (With very few hours on it.)
Just a little backgroud:
The engine came off a 26' boat and we put it on a 15'. It ran great with no alterations about 10 afternoons on the water, although we knew it needed a new prop and throttle cables to fit our boat. Then we added new throttle cables because the old ones weren't working, and ran it great about 4 more afternoons (without the new prop). Then the trouble set in...

The Problem:
The engine sounds great - throttle opens up on the engine when you push the throttle handle forward...but it will not go fast anymore, only a fast idle (about 5 mph). We have since replaced the prop with the correct pitch, changed all the spark plugs, checked for stripped gears, broken pins and cleaned the carbs, new fuel lines and tank - even added the ether preventor - All looks GREAT - like new. Like I said - the engine sounds great - fires off great - humming sweet like it should - is great for a fast idle ride down the river... just won't give us the speed anymore?? And we need to pull a tube!) This just has to be something simple... staring us in the face... we just don't know what.....

PLEASE HELP - MUCH THANKS for any ideas.
The frustrated -

Does the carb linkage actually go to wide open ? I would recheck the cable end connections to make sure one did not come loose.

Sounds like you aren't firing on all cylinders, have you checked for spark across the board?

check the timing plate connector on top of the throttle arm,Id bet you knocked it off or broke it during cable job, therefore your getting carb but no timing
