I know im gonna get flack but im just goint to take the seams on one of my duck boats .

on the bottom of one of them i have 6 inch wide strips of ply wood that are attached to the frame work. I was thinking of useing 4 inch wide 9 0z glass tape and poly resin you think that would be strong enuf?? ONly one layer of tape on the bottom also and then tape the whole outside seams.

Tell me what you think !

Do some research on Stitch and Glue ..... I believe the Glen-L site has some good info on it.

Re: PLywood duck boat seam taping

IM useing polyester resin and just taping the seams on the boat i have 1 seam on the bottom where the two sheats meet and 7 bow facing ones on the front 4 ft. Will poly resin work to seal the seams ?? On the inside of the boat ive glued the seams with liquid nails thats water proof. And they were held in place with cable ties then i mixed up some penut butter and filled the small holes where the seams werent perfect. Now im going to use poly resin with 8 0z cloth on all the seams around the boat. inculding the fore ones that i put penutbutter in.

What do you think ?? will it work ?? ANd no im not going to use epoxy

Make sure the ply is good and clean- well sanded. I would also HIGHLY recommend using epoxy rather than polyester resin, it costs more but has a MUCH better bond to the wood... I'd never build a wood boat with polyester.

Check out the information on West Systems page- They have some great books about wood boat repair and building, some of which are free on the site. Even if you don't use their products (U.S. Composites is MUCH cheaper!), the information is still applicable.

Its a waste of time and money to do this with polyester, get some epoxy, its the correct way to do it. The cost won't be much different because you'll be using so little resin.

Polyester will sort of stick for a while, but depending on the wood and where/how you take care of it, it may only stay in place for a year or two, maybe less. This leaves you with a no boat again, for a slight increase in cost right now (and it won't be much) it will last much much longer.

Re: PLywood duck boat seam taping

How much do you think i would need ? its 12 ft long and 46" wide with 7-8 4 ft stips 6 " wide in the front and some 4 ft but joints.

so about 90 ft of 4 inch cloth tape about 9oz weight. ??

i was Figuring about 1 gal what ever is left over ill just brush oiver the wood and seal it.

Re: PLywood duck boat seam taping

Using Polyester resin for a job like this REALLY is false economy- From U.S. Composites, Epoxy is about $61.00 for 1 1/3 gallon (1 gal resin + 3:1 Hardener), Which works out to about $45 a gallon, Where Poly is about $30 a gallon. To me, the price difference is not significant given the 'big picture', the epoxy works so much better with the wood, and will last MUCH longer!

I also find epoxies a lot easier and more pleasant to work with. MEKP is some nasty, NASTY stuff.

Figure out the total weight of the cloth you plan on using and then double it, you'll need about that amount of weight in epoxy.

The weight of your glass is 9 oz per square yard, add up the number of square inches to come up with the weight.

Re: PLywood duck boat seam taping

On my stitch and glue duck boat, I used three pieces of 4" on each seam. One down the middle then one overlapped on each side. I also used epoxy. Check out RAKA in Florida. Good stuff and good service.

I personally wouldn't go out in a boat with only one piece of tape on a seam and done with poly. Unless it was warm and I had on a good life jacket!
