Hopefully someone can please give some incite that might help me fix this problem? I have a 1995 Suzi' 75hp two stroke... I recently just cleaned the carbs out and got her running again. ran great for about a week, and now is giving me the same old problem

symptoms...
-rough idle at times...

-at high speeds will miss or bog down and force the motor to decelerate...

-ball is getting soft while running... sometimes... intermittent???

-the motor will "chirp" then "cough" and usually die... if i can get gas to fill the carbs, it will usually start right back up, and sometimes it wont start?

-sometimes the ball will be hard, but feels like there's air... then it will free up(it seems)and I can squeeze it and feel/hear gas filling the carbs...

If anyone can help me diagnose this problem, i would be really grateful!!!

could it be the fuel line or connector?
head gasket?
water in the gas?
reed valves seemed to look good when i looked at them while removing the carbs?
maybe fuel pump diaphragm or pump hoses? thanks for any help

Re: suzuki fuel problem

Mattyrich,
When you said you clean the carbs did you do a complete breakdown and cleaning? If the bulb goes soft it could be a fuel tank venting issue. Does it collapse? The chirping noise is due to your engine running lean ( not getting gas). This sounds to be an easy fix based on your info. Next time out when the bulb softens loosen the gas cap and see if this helps. If the bulb is collapsing then your fuel pump is sucking it shut which means it is probably ok. The issue sounds like it's between your tank and connection at the motor. You may even try replacing the fuel line and bulb. Disconnect the line from the engine and see if you can blow continuously back through it. If you can't, loosen the gas cap and try again to see what happens. Good luck.

The primer bulb will go soft after the engine has started. This is normal since fuel is being sucked through it -- fuel is not under pressure in the bulb. However if it is being sucked flat then there is a restriction between the bulb and the pickup in the tank. Since starvation seems to be the issue, have you checked the fuel pump. If it is weak or there is a hole in the diaphram it can't pump enough fuel to keep up with demand. They are rebuildable just like a carb.

If it's the fuel pump try squezing the bulb when you are having problems and see if it helps. If there are no changes then look elsewhere. Mattyrich, what is your definition of going soft?

Re: suzuki fuel problem

thanks to everyone for your incite to my problem... In response, I went ahead and changed out the diaphram's and spring in my fuel pump... the old diaphrams didnt look that bad as far as pin holes go... maybe one or two small pin holes. however the rubber material was a little flimsy and stretched where it flutters back and forth to pump fuel... I also replaced the fuel hose and ball. I ran it on the muffs in the driveway for about ten minutes and it seemed to run a little stronger with a faster response when I gave is gas... Hopefully I'll notice a response while on the water... The tank seems to be venting well enough, and I did do a complete carb cleaning in response to Waffles reply. Question: If I maybe turned in the pilot screws about an eighth of a turn would that help to supply more adequate fuel to the carbs? thanks again guys, tight lines, matt

Re: suzuki fuel problem

Adjusting the carbs 1/8 turn is just "tweaking" the carbs for a little bit better performance. If you adjusted the jets according to specs you should be close enough where it should run better than you described. When you broke the carbs down you removed and cleaned the jets too, correct?
