), then they cherry-pick only the facts that support their views.
This is why subjects like politics and religion are so touchy-- people have formed their hard and fast opinion, and when they are presented with an opposing view, they automatically react instead of stopping to consider the other point of view and try to see if there is any merit to it at all.
Like Lowkee said, this is why the scientific method exists. Science does not start with a preconceived notion. A theory is formed to try to explain something, but as soon as some info comes along that disproves the theory, the theory goes right out the window. It's human nature to form preconceived notions as "filters" to try to make sense of the world. Looking at things with a truly open mind is very hard to do.
