First of all thank you to anyone who reads this and any help is greatly appreciated. I am a fresh college grad who received a 1990 admiral 19.5 with a volvo penta 131D as a present for graduation from my grandpa. In the beginning of the summer the boat ran great , 4500 RPM - 25 MPH . Then 1 day ,boat starts great , no knocking , no problems and as soon as i left the marina i could not get the engine to go past 4000 rpm , and at any point past 3000 rpm it does not go past 10 MPH. My car mechanic suggested i change the plugs . I did with no success , at which point i changed the distributor cap and the clicker , still nothing. Another fun fact that as soon as u go over 3500 u start hearing a clicking noise , kinda like when u put bad fuel into a car , and u hear the spark plugs making noise . Please HELP , as it takes me 30 minutes to leave my marina lol. :(

Well, you mentioned the bad gas. Maybe fuel filter.

You also have a timing belt. May be worn and slipped.

Sounds like you've got most of the tune up parts done. How about the points?

If you have compression tester, you could run a compression check. That could tell you if something is wrong internally and give you a general idea of the wear on the rings and valves. Low compression could be caused by a slipped timing belt as well.

Good luck.

Re: Volvo 131D power loss :( !!!

ty sir , I actually went on today just to check exactly when the clicking noise begins and when the rpm's top out . At exactly 3500 a clicking( like a nail tappin on metal) noise begins in the engine , and after which the engine will not go past 3900 rpm's but roar's. Since that noise originated when the problem began , i am associating it with the problem. So the next step is to do the compresion test as u recommended , does anyone have any clue what that noise can be ?.Just wanna know what i should test for to find it and why does it only happen at exactly 3500 .

The noise could be a ping or knock. I would not run the boat this way, you could do further damage.

Do the compression test and let us know the results.

Compression test:

Engine warmed, all plugs out, Throttle fully opened.
Check the plugs. How do they look? Is one different from the rest? Are the gapped correctly? Make sure the wires go back on correct.

Good Luck.:)
