Paint Question: Has Anyone Ever Used This?

I have a 17 ft flats type boat that I have been doing some floor repairs too. I did some patch work with the hopes of getting another couple of years out of her. I have the floor all done and the deck sanded down and is about ready for paint. I have it primered at the moment. I have been doing this whole project on a low budget. I have been thinking of painting the deck with a garage floor epoxy paint, the ones bought at lowes. These are a 1 part epoxy paint. Has anyone ever used this type of paint before on a deck? I can get a gallon for about 27 bucks instead of the hundred or so dollars for the marine epoxy. Could use some feedback on this.

I'm far from expert on this.

I'd think that for a deck, it'd be fine. It's not like a deck takes much abuse.--------ok, mostly;)

It would probably work, but I would think that a good quality outdoor oil base (aka alkaloid) deck paint would be better. It will probably expand and contract with the wood deck better than a paint designed to be hard and stick to concrete paint.

One part epoxies aren't really epoxies, but they do get to borrow the name. The other problem is since its designed for indoor use it may not hold up all that well in the sun. Get some floor and deck paint with a little non skid added and you'll be fine.

Actually you never said what the surface you?ll be painting is made of.

Re: Paint Question: Has Anyone Ever Used This?

There was a post on here a little while back where someone wanted to do the exact same thing, so he decided to contact the maker of the product. The poster said that the manufacturer did not recommend it be used to cover a flexible surface such as wood because it was made for a solid surface such as concrete that has little movement at all, and would end up coming off in a very short time. He said you would have to be reapply it once or twice a year...

Also the manufacturer recommended acrylic latex porch/deck paint for the application. If you read up on the latest paints for exterior use other than epoxy based, you will find that acrylic latex paints have surpassed the oil based paints in all aspects. This is because it is the most researched and developed paint due to the extreme demands of the housing industry. Its very UV, heat, and water resistant, and does not break down in extreme environments like an oil based product will.

The surface is fiberglass. The floor is wooden with a 4 inch strip of fiberglass mesh around the edges to seal the floor to the hull. I also put 3 coats of epoxy resign over the wooden floor. I had about 3/4 of a gallon of exterior latet primer so I put a light coat of it and samded it smooth. I was planning on putting some anti skid in whatever paint I am going to use.

Dont want to have to go back and do it a couple times a year. I think the best bet would be some good oil based deck paint with some anti skid in it.

You could roll gelcoat for about $50 a gallon? Just add sandblasting sand for non skid.

I'd say you've already decided what paint you are going to use. If it's primed with an exterior latex- paint it with one. If you want to use something more 'exotic', you'll probably have to remove that primer.

I've had boats for years that were painted with nothing more than exterior house paint... Look up a designer by the name of Phil Bolger, and a builder/author named Harold Payson- I have built a number of their boats, and they always ended up being painted with exterior latex per their suggestion. They hold up well, and are easy and cheap to repaint when required.
