I have a 1982 Johnson 115(sea horse) that cranks and in nutral runs great. The issue is when I put in in gear and "throttle down" it bogs down and does not accelerate and reach optimal RPMS, that is unless I hold the "push to choke" ignition key down then it revs up gets on plane and runs great (until I let up on the key in the ignition). I hope this is enough info to get some idea of what this issue could be. Thanks for any feed back.

If you have to choke it to get the engine to run, it is running lean. The carbs may not be flowing the proper fuel needed. I'd pull the top carb and inspect it. Pull the jets and check them for restrictions, also check for dried fuel in the bottom of the carb bowl. If you find anything, overhaul that carb and do the other one, too.

Thanks for the feedback, I will take a look as suggested. My hope is that the remedy will be something a little simplier than a carb overhaul. Is there a fuel additive on the market that may be a tried first to clean up the carbs ?

Fuel additaves woun't really clean a dirty carb, but will keep a clean carb clean. I run sea foam in all my engines all the time.

You might try removing the high speed jets, easy to do on your engine, and see if they have trash in them, if so a carb rebuild is in order.

Thank you for the response, will follow your recommendation. I am a seafoam user myself, great stuff.

buy yourself a genuine manual for your engine, carb rebuilds are quite easy for a person of average mechanical skills with quite basic hand tools.

You don't want to run the engine if it has a lean condition. It can starve a cyl for not only fuel, but the lubricating oil which goes with the fuel and that can quicly lead to other catastrophic issues.

Thanks, I have been running the boat and fishing out of it, Guess I shouldn't do that anymore until I get the issue corrected. I will order a manual online.
Thanks again,

Make sure to get a factory manual, a little more expensive but a much better manual.
