Be cautious of any boat that has any resemblance whatsoever of having the breath run out of it, which would include that one. Caveat Emptor

REINFORCED TRANSOM AND DECK.

I would wonder about this part...
Is it reinforced because the motor is too big or the transom is rotton.
200 HP seems like alot for a 1978 18' boat, to me.

Whats the price? I guess if its not to expencive then the motor and controls would be worth the cost.

They are asking $1900 for it. I also thought the motor was kinda big for this boat, I guess I should make sure theres no cracks or rot forming. Is there anything to look for to make sure the transom is good? thanks

I spoke with the owener about the boat. I have a concern with the added wait from the reinfocements he did. Im going to check it out tommorow. Anyone know if this can be a problem? He did reinforced the transome which holds the 200hp motor. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I would'nt cut the corners to sharp in that thing, What are you looking for in a boat?? fishing, running around with the family, tubing, what?? Just trying to get an idea of what your looking for, Is it just how much it cost that matters or what your using it for, Just getting an idea:)

$1900 isn't bad just for the engine...maybe that's all he's really selling.

Re: Found Another one for sale...

I want to just use as a run around island hopper and im guessing i'll tow a tube every now and then. Its just for me and my dog for the most part, but im sure family will come and friends every now and then. Not more than 5 at a time. I will be using it mostly in the intercoastals, rivers, and if possible just near the beaches. Not looking to got out to the ocean. Budget is just under $1900 so thats what i got to work with. Not much, but im sure it will get me on the water. Thanks :D

Re: Found Another one for sale...

I understand the budget issues, with a 200hp it could get dangerous if not careful. Here in my neck of the woods a reinforced transom is a 2X4 screwed into the stern:D Your safety always comes first, not only how much it cost, check her out real good and ask alot of questions if your not sure, doesn't mean he'll be honest with his answers though, he wants to sell it. Make sure that's what it is you want, not just the cost. I live on a good size lake and yes that boat would be as fast as a bass boat on smooth water but when you have alot of waves from wind, passing boats and just plain ole boat traffic they are not running around very fast, they almost have to crawl until the waves calm down. If it was me I would pass but that is just how I feel for how i boat, your needs might be differant then mine, Just IMO.

I'd buy it if the engine was taken care of it. Put a governer on it or a throttle restrictor if safety is an issue. Worst case you have a bad *** 200HP engine you could move to another hull if that's a project you are interested in.

All of the above assumes of course that the transom is SAFE. If not, you may still want the engine, but you won't want the boat.

The initial budget is understood, have you considered the ongoing budget? That 200 is a thirsty beast.

Could be a diamond in the rough, could be a polished turd. No way of knowing until you look. I'd be concerned about the "re-enforced floor and transom". It's very rare that someone does that correctly. In my limited experience, it's also rare that a floor or transom needs re-enforced, but doesn't need replaced. I don't know about your area, but in mine, there are an awful lot of boats in that price range. Some are nice, some are not so nice. A big motor on a little boat like that could have been seriously abused....

exactly.

And in my book if it says "needs some TLC" it really means "this is a fiberglass tub filled with rotten wood"

Re: Found Another one for sale...

Thanks everyone for your replies. I checked the boat out today. I liked it but told him i needed to think about it. He explained that all the reinforcements were done to hold the 200hp motor. One thing I noticed is that he also added to chains from the back of the transom where the motor bolts on, too the center of the boat. Anyone seen or heard of something like this? Did not find any rotting. I checked the transom for week spots and it seems very strong. Ofcourse the boat could use a bit of cosmetic work, which I dont mind. Overall the boat seemed pretty solid. I also got the price down to $1200 bucks. :D The trailer is in great shape and is a 2003 model. I think the guy is kinda needing the money from are conversation. What do you guys think???????????

Thanks again for all the replies

Re: Found Another one for sale...

never heard of the chain thing? i bet the max horsepower for that boat was originally in the neighborhood of 115hp? that 200 is a beast. i have a 200 yamaha on my 19 1/2 foot glastron open bow and can run 52mph. i bet that thing will fly. but the question is, will it do it safely? If you checked the boat out thoroughly and it seemed sound, go for it. as long as you respect the motor you wont get into any trouble. also, did you hear the motor run?

Re: Found Another one for sale...

I'm guessing the chains bolted to the center of the boat to the transom are there for when the transom fall off the back you won't loose yer motor.... just don't go in reverse too hard.

redneck rigged for sure.

the motor & trl sound like they may be worth$1500 for sure-find a decent hull needing a 200hp motor- use or sell trl and bingo- decent rig for less than $2500.

Re: Found Another one for sale...

I'd say that is a specialty boat for an experienced specialized owner, like a home-made 12' tunnel boat with a 100 on it. If you are not that owner, run away. There are plenty of used normal boats, correctly rigged, out there.
