I am having a heck of a time finding a universal disconnect for my fuel line. Years ago I would go to wally world but around here they do not have them. I was wondering instead of using a disconnect why not use a shut off? can anyone find any reason why this would not work? I could put it after the filter correct?

Re: Fuel Switch

i installed one on my coleman generator, it had a problem of leaking gas out of the carb if it sat for too long...... yes even after i rebuilt the carb it still leaked, and cleaned the fuel tank and changed the fuel lines.

i dont see why it wouldnt work....... provided you find one large enough so that it doesnt restrict your fuel flow.

Re: Fuel Switch

Funny you should be talking about this subject. I'm looking to do exactly the same thing next weekend. Although I have an outboard complete with primer bulb, the fuel line is "hard wired" as it were at both the engine and under deck fuel tank. It should make running the carbs dry much easier.

I'm planning to install this upline of the water separating fuel filter. I think you can even buy them at this site.

Be sure to use good thread sealant.

Re: Fuel Switch

After shutting off the fuel line, wont a vacuum be developed in the remaining fuel line, preventing the engine from running?

If this is intended for a large outboard, wouldn't a quick disconnect in the fuel line just outside the cowling work better?

Not to be confused with good, but the engine would still run, and fuel would drain from the line going into the engine.

I have been looking for a disconnect and having trouble finding one I like. I do not think I can put one on the cowl. That is a good point about the vacumm, can anyone add to that?

Re: Fuel Switch

If you want a simple quick disconnect, use these Chrysler/Force parts (similar parts are used by Nissan and Tohatsu). These are the sliding collar disconnect, similar to air tools and hoses.

Fuel hose fitting:

Motor or tank fitting.

Both parts together are less than $7.00. A nice tight fit that doesn't leak and comes apart with one hand. Once disconnected, both ends are sealed.

Here is a quick disconnect I added to a 85hp Force. I used Evinrude/Johnson parts, just because I had them on hand and they are readily available should the plastic hose end break.

With the cowl off so the interior connection can be seen:

So these are at a car dealership? This is what I used on another boat I bought them at walmart in Austin but in Dallas I am having trouble at some of the places I have been. I will keep looking.

Re: Fuel Switch

They are available at marine retailers. Just take the link I posted and it will take you to the iboats marine store. Walmart has the johnson parts I used on the Force.

Chrysler used to make outboards, that eventually became Force. Therefore the Chrysler/Force reference. No , they can not be bought at a Chrysler dealer.

If you don't want to order them from iboats, any big marina should have them.

Re: Fuel Switch

Years ago when i raced 2 cycle motorcycles, we would shut off fuel lines and let engine run out of fuel. "At the time", it was said to stop the sedamentation of the oil in flote bowl. "fouling plugs". Gas evaperates. SOOOO! I put an inline ballcock shutoff and use it while I trailer the boat. Have had NO problems.

Re: Fuel Switch

Most outboards today are set up so when the motor is tilted up, the floats shut off the fuel flow, so no shut off valve is need on these motors.

Both my 1985 85hp force and 92 Johnson are designed this way.

Re: Fuel Switch

A lot of people are recommending against running the gas out of larger outboards due to E10.
