Honey colored oil out exhaust port on 59 10 HP Johnson

I went fishing in a no wake zone, so the day was limited to trolling. The next morning, I noticed a sizeable puddle of honey colored fluid on the floor of my garage. It was coming from the exhaust port. I've used this engine a few times before without issue, but have never only trolled. I thought it was lower unit oil, so I drained it. There was a lot of water and black sludge, but nothing the same color as the oil on my floor. I also didn't see any seals on the screws that I took out. What I'm hoping is that the last guy didn't use seals when they replaced the oil and my water problem could go away if I put in seals when I replace the lower unit oil. That would keep me from tearing into the lower unit. But then what is the oil coming out the exhaust? Should I try replacing the seals on the drain/vent screws, go out and run at normal speeds and then come in and see if 1) I get oil on the floor again and 2) is there water in the lower unit oil? I really hate to tear into the lower unit if not needed.

I ran a 2 stroke quad for a number of years when I was a kid. After panzie-footing around for a half a day, oil would drip out of my exhaust pipes. This happened for a combination of reasons: The engine wouldn't get hot enough to burn all the fuel, and I ran my mixture a little fat. A little extra lube went a long way between rebuilds. The worst I ever had to change was a few fouled spark plugs and clean a clogged jet or two.

If you were doing a lot of slow speed running I would bet that what you are seeing is unburn't oil/gas mixture dripping on the floor.
If you change the lower unit oil make sure to replace the seal washers on the screws.

Thanks guys. Would the unburned oil be a honey brown color. I'm hoping that trolling is the problem, but I was concerned that it was not darker like the oil I mix with the gas. Maybe the partial combustion changes the appearance?

PS. I am impressed by the fast responses.

The oil I dripped was usually pretty black in color. Maybe just due to the carbon it cleaned off the inside of the pipes on its way out? It was a pretty long exhaust system.

Can the lower unit oil/lubricant make it's way into the exhaust ports due to water intrusion? I'm fairly certain this was not the same oil I put in the gas. Unfortunately, I didn't smell it to see if there was gas present. Also, it looked nothing like the oil that came out the louwer unit drain after the water escaped. It was a thick black sludge.

Change your lower unit oil with new gaskets on the screws, take the motor out and run the snot out of it. I bet the leak will be gone or greatly decreased. With a oil ratio of 24:1, it is normal for the leakage from the exhaust after slow speed running.

I had the same problem with a 1960 18 horse Evinrude. I had no owner's manual but I'd been thinking the oil ratio was 24 to 1 and after I sold the boat and motor, the buyer thought maybe the ratio fror a 1960 should be 50 to 1. Never saw him again to find out if the oily exhaust problem went away if he did use 50 to 1 ratio. Are you sure the ratio for your motor is 24 to 1 rather than 50 to 1?
