Re: transom and floor replacement

the gelcoat will be here Friday but I needed a wet film gauge so I spray it the right thickness. I also needed styrene and more PVA. They will all be here on monday. I am anxious but I need to wait so I can do it right. With about $400 on the line I want to make sure this goes right.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I just got home and found my gelcoat is here. I had not seen the color as the website has pictures of the outside of the can and not the product so I ordered it on a description. I opened the many layers of security for shipping hazmat and WOW It is perfect. Bright Deep Yellow. 5 gallons of it. and 4 bottles of MEKP. I cant wait to get it sprayed and see it on the boat. I am so tempted to go out and start spraying, but I dont have a wet film guage, any thinner, or enough PVA. and the gelcoat is about 35 degrees right now from being on the ups truck. Tonight and tomorrow I will finish a little filling on the transom. Sunday I will warm up the Garage and products and clean the boat. Then Monday as soon as the other materials get here I will be in the garage spraying. I will probably meet the UPS guy at the door to his truck with my paint suit and resperator on.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Well I chose yellow because Most of the new boats seem to have some yellow accents to them around here. Also I am using it for the top as well and I would have used black but I didnt want to burn myself on hot gelcoat. Almost all boats are white and I wanted something different that would stand out but looked new. I think the yellow fits pretty well. When I finish I will accent it with some bright purple (I havent decided on a design yet) then upholster in yellow and purple. I think it will look good.

That sucks. I would go off on a political rant here but dont want ot offend anyone. But I feel for you.

Thanks Ski, Yeah I could go on a very long rant myself, work my *** off for 5 yrs to be thrown out on my *** and over charged for everything...... I'll stop there and get back to my comment about your boat :)

Can't wait to see how the gelcoat comes out!!! We are just sanding and starting the body work on the cap. I hate sanding so looking at all your guys' threads help with motivation.

Re: transom and floor replacement

Nothing major tonight, Just filled and sanded the transom where I sanded the fiberglass with 80 grit and had some grooves. The hull is now all smooth and ready. Tomorrow I will start a fire to get everything warmed up and blow everything off, tack cloth and wipe everything down. Try to get every bit of dust out of the garage.
I have an idea I am kicking around. If I cant get the gelcoat to flow thru the airgun right I may try using my wagner power sprayer. The major problem Is it tends to drip pretty bad while spraying so I will have to wrap a rag around the nozzle to catch any drips so they dont hit the boat. I may also have to throw it away after if the acetone eats the plastic from cleaning it. I will only go that way as a last resort but it might be an option.

SKIBUM1M,
Make sure you get some pic's or video. :D
How large is the orifice in your gun?
I really hope it goes good for you. I want to see that bad boy in the bright yellow.
I'll be waiting for your report.

Re: transom and floor replacement

The airgun is a 2.0 tip. I had a 1.4 but bought this for the gelcoat. The gelcoat says it has styrene in it and also says not to add anything to it. That and Ondrvr's advice make me not want to add anything at all to it. So if it doesnt spray well enough thru the airgun I will try the wagner. I know the wagner will push it because I used it to paint the exterior of a house and it did fine. the homeowner bought an expensive wagner that wouldnt move the paint at all. I am just currious what I can use to clean the gun with other than acetone that will not eat plastic.

The 2.0 should be fine, from everything I have read.
The only other thing I could think of was maybe some mineral spirits.
I'm not sure if it would clean it or not, but it won't eat the plastic.

Re: transom and floor replacement

I am getting pretty excited. Tomorrow is spray day. I am currently heating the garage up to the 77 degrees which is prefered temp. I am heating it a day in advance to warm the boat as well as the air. After the kids are to bed I will go clean the hull. I have a box fan running to circulate the air. I also have a furnace filter on the back of the fan to remove the dust from the air

Re: transom and floor replacement

I had the garage up to 98 degrees so I think I will be good for heat. I made a video, dont laugh.

I will try to make one of the gelcoating process but once I start mixing catylist I only have about 10 minits before the gelcoat sets up so I wont have time to mess with the camera then.

Looking good skibum! I finally had a chance to read some threads- I came in for a potty break:D

Looks like we will both be busy tomorrow, I should be done with the seacast before you even get started though since I'm starting at 7am.

Well I gotta get back out and finish up my supports for the transom! I'll be starting the seacast in about 7 hours:eek:
