when you ground the black and yellow wire it kills the eng...... if it is bad it may have grounded somwhere and it wont let it fire.

you can bypass the neutral safety but be carefull in doing so...

have you checked ebay or anywhere for a remote control unit?..... new ones are outrageous but used ones are fairly cheap.

Re: 70 hp johnson not starting

if it starts by unplugging the red plug ,or the ignition sw in your case, it usually indicates a bad switch , wires on switch wrong, or bad wire from switch to plug.

so with everything hooked up correctly to the switch it will start for a second and die?........... or will it not even fire up?

Re: 70 hp johnson not starting

if it has strong spark and starts with the red plug undone your problem is in the wires.

the extra blak and yellow wire on the kill switch is probably for it to wired in as an extra..... or it could be for a safety lanyard.

the ignition wiring diagram on continuous wave has all the extra switches but the onyl one you have to have is the ignition switch.

have you tried applying the accessory wire to the battery wire and touching the starter wire to see if your wires are good all the way to the switch?......... im thinking you may have high resistance in the wires coming from the plug to the switch since you have weal spark while the ign sw is hooked up.

are your wires shiny or black looking?

Re: 70 hp johnson not starting

are you wiring into the harness behind the red plug on the motor side or do you have a harness that plugs into the eng plug?

i have read about people having problems with aftermarket switches.... thats why i asked before if you had oem or aftermarket.

on mine you have to turn the key and then push in for the choke.. after that the eng will stop turning over and you have to kind of twitch your wrist and she will bust off....... i have had people try to start it but they couldnt figure out how to choke it and get it to turn over at the same time....... so i left it that way as an anti-theft measure........... mine is aftermarket too by the way.

im sure you have started over many times...... and i can see your frustration.

im a little stumped, maybe we are overlooking something..... the part that has me stumped is it runs without the connector plugged up, but has weak spark when the connector is plugged together..... it is possible you have a bad switch. i used to sell auto parts and i can tell you just because its brand new doesnt mean its good........ some things are made in the middle of the week and others are made on mondays and fridays, lol.

also how do you kill it when you jump it?.......... do you choke it out or use the black/yellow wire?

if we dont get it before long hang in there and someone will see our predicament and pipe in....... i just feel like we are overlooking something.
