My tach on my 2005 caravelle is very inconsistent. It usually seems to read really high. It likes 4000rpm but when I throttle up will come down some and as I continue to throttle up will go back up. Would this ba a shorted wire, sending unit or in the gauge?

Re: Crazy tach

tach has nothing to do with the boat, it has to do with the engine. what do you have???

Re: Crazy tach

Mine does the same thing, at idle it says I am at 1400-2000 and then it is about 2 grand high most of the time, but sometimes it will work fine. I was thinking a loose ground or something on mine, I really have not looked into it much yet. At WOT is is dead on so I am just confused.

Re: Crazy tach

Your's sounds just like mine. I have been wanting to see what my top speed is but am afraid my tach won't tell me I'm overevving. I have a 5.0 MPI and it's scary to see 5000rpm even though I know I am way below that.

I have a timing gun that also reads RPM's, I hooked it up and set it on the seat while I tested everything. I only found out because it said I was idleing at 12-1400 and the motor sounded way to slow for that. I think mine is a ground since some of my other gauges bounce around every now and then but I just haven't had time to jump in and figure it out. I also have the 5.0 and if it is set up properly you will not be able to over rev it assuming you have the correct prop on.
