Problem with Starter

I have 3.0 GM block (engine). Starter bolts are offset. I've used different types of starters, big ones and the small high torque ones. I've also used new bolts and shims (shims made the problem worse). The problem I am having is the starter works fine the first few starts, then over a short period of time, the starter cracks (breaking the front (cone) of the starter). There is no electrical problem. Some people have spare tires...I have 2 spare starters in the boat..hahaha...If anyone has had a similar problem where the starter keeps on cracking...please help. Thanks...Vic.

Re: Problem with Starter

It's time to pull the engine out, remove the flywheel cover and see what the starter is actually doing in the ring gear.
You could also have water getting into the cylinders TRYING to cause a hydrolock and causing excess strain on the starter.
Could also be a timing problem.
Lot's of vibration on the engine can also cause the problem. Does your model require a front support bracket?
You don't list a year or SN, so hard to give exact info.

Re: Problem with Starter

Don, thanks for the reply...My engine serial number is 401 204 7410. Not sure what year it is though. The engine doesn't have hydrolock, It doesn't have a hard start. Over time, say a two week period..the starter will crack (front cone). The engine does shake/vibrate considerably, only at start ups, then when warm, it runs normal.
Thanks, Vic
