Great Forum!

1993 Evinrude 115.

Have replaced the stator, timing base, rectifier/regulator, coils, plugs and wires. and power pack. All CDI. Runs great, but the power pack only last's for 15-20 minutes and boat runs like cr@p again. My mechanic is stumped as well as the people at CDI. We are on our third PP and waiting on new one from factory, not distributor. Oh yeah even switched out flywheel off motor that runs great and back again. Anybody have issues like this? If so what was the fix?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Keep loosing the power pack

Any voltage leaking to the powerpack via the black w/yellow kill wire can do that.

Bad ignition coils can do that.

Bad rectifier with fused wires can do that if the battery voltage gets to the ignition.

Except for the fly wheel all parts are brand new.

The wiring harness (kill wire) is all brand new?

All it takes is one quick short in the harness, harness plug or ignition switch to feed positive voltage the wrong way to that wire and your powerpack is history. That could happen just from turning the motor if the wiring is frayed at the transom.

No the wiring harness is not new. The kill switch is around one year old. The wiring is not.

Did this problem begin shortly after the kill switch was replaced? Any work done to or in the vicinity of the ignition switch?

Silvertip. No and no. This issue started last month. At first thought it might have been a fuel issue. Rebuilt carbs, removed ball and spring from check valve, ran new fuel lines, and replaced both inline filter and water seperator. Still ran poorly. Pulled power pack and you could insert you finger about a 1/2 inch into the backing. Changed out PP, ran good not great for about 20 mins. Then ran like cr@p. Sent PP back, installed new one ran good for 20 minutes. Then ran like cr@p. Installed new stator, timing base, rectifier/regulator, coils, plugs and wires. Ran like cr@p. Replace PP and it ran better than it ever has in the time I've owned the boat. (7 yrs). For twenty minutes. At this point waiting on new PP and will have mech check kill switch wires as suggested.

I really appreciate everyones replies.

Sorry didn't mean kill switch wires, but black and yellow kill wires.

Ezeke,
I think you have something there. I just remembered, about 5 years ago my wiring harness under the cowling, I think it's called the internal wiring harness, got fried. Replaced it and it ran as good as it ever did. Never did figure out what caused it. Maybe the kill wires need replacing after the internal wiring harness plug towards the console? Before the last PP went out I got 5600 RPMs out of the motor, I've never gotten better than 5100 R's plus the hole shot was a lot stronger. I always wondered if I had the wrong prop, but since it was in the acceptable range of 4800-5600 I never worried about it. Will bring this up to the mech so we can address it before installing the new PP.

One thing for sure, once this issue is resolved I'm going to have one tight motor! Everything under the cowling has been looked at and addressed. At least once.

You need a new mechanic, if what you're saying is true then he is just guessing and parts changing, at your expense. Sorry for being blunt but any good tech should be able to find the problem quickly.
Unplug the boat wiring harness. Use a remote starter or the tech should have an external harness and start the engine. See how it runs. Also double check the engine wiring.

Re: Keep loosing the power pack

Had mech test black/yellow kill wire, no voltage reading. Installed newest PP. Ran fair but not right. That night at dinner my wife says, well you've replaced everything but the ignition switch. Didn't even realize she was paying attention and said your right. Threw on new ignition switch and she runs great, I mean really great! I have had her out twice and all issues appear to have been resolved. Thanks to all that replied.
