Got a problem with a coil that overheats. Working 1979 chry 318 IB 225hp with electronic ign. I read 7.4 v at b+ of coil with ign switch on but eng not running. Start eng and voltage fluctuates so I am unable to get a steady reading. The coil will get very hot to the touch and eng will stop after about 30 min. Stbd eng runs fine and coil is half the temp. Coil has been replaced as well as ign module. Any help or ideas to check will be appreciated.

How much is the voltage at the coil fluctuating?
Your coil is externally resisted, correct? Have you replaced the ballast resister?

May want to check the voltage output directly at the alt at 1500rpms.

I have swaped the resistor with no effect. I will check alt voltage. Readings on my digital volt meter at B+ of coil when engine running jumps as if it is reading the make and break of the reluctor. Readings seem to read above 10v to less than 10v. Thanks for the help.

Make sure the module grounds well. Check all wires and plug connectors in that harness also.
