I need help with determining the correct rings to order. I have looked and cannot find any serial number on the motor.

I have a 1989 90 hp force outboard. What rings should I be ordering? I hope to order these by monday morning so if someone can help I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks
Jim

Well, to start with, the 90hp wasn't made until 1990.

And secondly, Why do you need rings? It has been my experience that if the rings are so badly damaged to need replacement, then the engine needs rebuilding with new pistons.

Re: correct rings to order

on the first issue i noticed that fact myself after making the post. It is definitely a 90 hp. There is a stamp on the lower end unit that has a number and then a 89 with a circle around it, for this reason I assumed it was an 89. I guess we shoudl assume it is a 90 or maybe I shold assume nothing but not having any ofther id or numbers I am unsure what to do.

As to why I need rings. My mechanic here in mexico diagnosed the problem as a problem with the rings when I had no compression in one of the cylinders. We took the motor apart and discovered that the rings were frozen. In trying to remove the ring he has broken it and yes there are other problems. The pistons appear to be okay and so do the rods. I am the one who had the scoring behind the roller bearings and I Know the fix will probably be short lived. My mechanic has advised me of that also. Because the cost of labor is cheap and parts (new crankshaft etc.) are hard to get it is worth it to put it back together and use it cautiously till it breaks. In the meantime I can look for a merc or a johnson to replace it with as parts for those are readily available.

So back to my problem.I have someone coming down on thursday and if i can get him the correct rings before then I can get my damn boat runningn again. Does anyone know the correct ring for the 90 hp force year 1990.

Frank or anyone let me know please.

Thanks
jim

Re: correct rings to order

The only help I can give is that if it is indeed a 90 then the cylinder bores are 3.375. At least the bottom ring is a square one, but I don't remember, the top ring may be semi-keystone or may also be plain rectangular. As to part numbers---I can be no help.

BY the way: If it is the bottom ring that was broken, sometimes these engines will run quite nicely with only the top ring installed---That's another experiment I will try when I get a "Round Tuit" I had a 125 with about 1/2 of the bottom ring missing on one piston and I never noticed a loss of performance. I only found it when the crankpin (which was slightly etched when I rebuilt the engine--remember your other post?) gave up after one season.
