I just bought a 18' custom craft with a 100hp evinrude 100993. motor is from 1979. the lower end was just rebuilt due to thinking i had a bad prop shaft. I am having an issue keeping this engine running at idle. if I power up it runs fine but as soon as I move the controls to the center posistion then it stalls.what can I do? I was told to try to clean carbs and or set idle. is there any method to clean carbs without removing them? and how do i set timing?

You're looking for a "easy fix" on the carbs-- Don't blame you BUT there is none :(
Buck up & remove & REBUILD them (you'll realize its no big deal once you do it)
Check out the Top Secert" files

Before you disassemble the carbs try removing the float bowl drain plugs and see what kind of crud comes out. Also check/replace spark plugs. A number of possible things can cause you to lose your idle. Fouled plugs and dirty carbs are the first suspects.

How easy does it start and how easy to maintain idle before applying throttle?

it will fire right up on the third turn of the key almost every time. i ran it on the muffs today for about 35 mins at 2200 rpm any lower she dies. i am almost giving up on this as i just learned the acronym for BOAT
Bring On Another Thousand!! LOL. anyway i am taking it to the shop and paying the 45 dollars to have it diagnosed. i just don't have time to really get into this project as it is stored an hour from my house and i can't park it here.
Thanks for the replies and if any other suggestions before tuesday would be appreciated

If the engine has been sitting for a while, the fuel in the carbs may have dried up in the passages, restrictin them. A carb overhaul is a likely fix to your problem. If there is any crud in the idle ciricuits of the carb internals, it won't idle. You need to disassemble and blow the passages out with an aerosol carb cleaner.

2200 RPM on muffs is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. You're begging for a runaway and will be ducking a thrown rod in no time if you continue this. What is an $80 problem will soon be a several thousand dollar problem.

Nothing you run in your fuel will sufficiently clean out your carbs to restore a good idle condition. Rebuild them one at a time. It is not hard. You most likely have clogged low speed circuits.
