'97 Evinrude 40 Horse - Sounds Like a HD

Just a quick question. Every time I get out in the water, I feel like I'm waking the dead with my '97 40hp Evinrude. The motor runs like a champ and I've never had a problem, whether I'm trolling at idle or running full out; however, I've gotten to the point where I'm almost self conscious about firing the thing up. It has very few hours on it, but it growls like a Harley Davidson. Is this normal for this type of engine, or should I consider taking it to the local marina for a once-over. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like me hitting my nike sq2 driver at the range, everyone turns to stare and asks me wtf was that???

All outboard exhaust is underwater so how can it be loud?? Is it noise coming from the powerhead perhaps, maybe an exhaust cover leak, have you had the cowl off to inspect it?

I've checked for leaks, any everything appears to be in good order. I had it out on the lake this morning and, as usual, it ran great. I had a guy pull up next to me with a much older 40-horse Johnson that just purred when he started up his boat. I started mine and he actually made a comment about how loud it was. Maybe there's nothing wrong, but it sounds like maybe I need to break down and let the pros take a look at it.

how does the lower unit sit in the water. exhaust is out of the center of the prop.

Exhaust megaphone maybe suspect, seals gone, rotten or missing ???
Having said that, is this a jet drive ???
