I just purchased a 1998 Evinrude that had it's oil injection system removed. The previous owner was told by his marine mehanic that the oil injection system would fail and to remove the tank and run mixed gas. Is this true? I got the tank from him and it would be nice to not have to mix fuel.

Thanks in advance

1998 should have the OMS oil mixing system no a VRO. so mixing should be good. the cost to put it back together, could be costly. personally i would just premix 50:1.

I agree. Stick with the premix if you are there already.

Why would it be costly to put back? I have the tank so I just have to connect and fill with oil. If the cost was nothing would you guys still use the pre-mix?

Does it still have the OMS pump ???? if so is the oil side working ??
If no then it would be an expensive modification.
Personally I would stick with the devil I knew !!!

I not familiar with the system. I had a look tonight and the tank has an oil drain nipple on the bottom. I removed the air box and noticed what looked like to be two fuel pumps on the left and right side which looked similar and one fuel line going to the carbs. The system worked fine when it was removed and had been used for 3 or 4 years without any problems. The previous owner had been told to remove the tank and run premix to prevent any engine failure. If I had to guess would one pump be used to pump the oil from the tank then mix it with the fuel from the second pump then to the carbs? Would the oil pump rate be controled by engine vacuum? If the system worked and Evinrude never had any problems with this I would rather run it than mix oil but that's only if the system was reliable.

Wow, 2 pumps to feed a 25hp carb'd motor.
Well if you have everything there to hook it up then give it a go if that is what you choose. One note though,
Stay premixing your fuel until you know that the motor is taking the required amount of oil through the oiling system. That way if for some reason it is not working when you hook it up you will not fry your motor. Check the oil tank level
as you use it and once you confirm it is feeding oil at the 50 to 1 ratio then you can stop premixing.

Good Luck and let us all know how you make out.

Personally I would continue to premix. Just my humble opinion though.

I have to try and figure out how to reinstall. I'm not sure were the oil feed line goes to from the bottom of the tank. The barb fitting on the tank is smaller than the fuel line. Premixing the fuel to me just seems to be a pain and would prefer to get the motor back the way Evinrude intended it. Also if I borrowed the boat to someone or the wife took it out and decided to fill it with fuel they won't even think about premixing it. Everything I own from my snow maching to my other boats used straight gas also when I go to resale it there would be alot of questions as to why the tank was off.

Now to figure out the plumbing?
