1968 Evinrude 6hp problem

I have a 6hp Evinrude outboard motor model number 6802R.

It starts up fine, but it requires faster speed setting to maintain idling and kills after revving up and coming down quick in neutral. It does rev up well and maintains good running speed but I have to come down slow to prevent the motor from dying. Any suggestions?

I have a good fuel tank, new fuel line, and fresh 50:1 oil gas mixture. The tank and fuel line was tested on my 15hp Evinrude and the 15hps ran and idle without problems. I just added this so it would exclude a tank, fuel line or gas mixture as an issue.

This motor has had a recent carb job with complete kit and the fuel pump is cleaned, well sealed and not leaking.

Thanks for your time!

Re: 1968 Evinrude 6hp problem

Who rebuilt the carb?

Was the low speed needle valve properly adjusted after the rebuild?

Was the float set properly? Was the high speed orifice reinstalled properly after removal and cleaning?

Does the motor run at idle when partially or completely choked?

What are the compression figures for the engine?

How did the motor run before you rebuilt the carb?

Re: 1968 Evinrude 6hp problem

Who rebuilt the carb?(marine mechanic in Minnesota...i bought the engine off ebay and the seller has very good rep and satisfaction scores.)

Was the low speed needle valve properly adjusted after the rebuild? (I will have to get back with you on that in a day or so when I have an afternoon off)

Was the float set properly? Was the high speed orifice reinstalled properly after removal and cleaning? (I will have to get back with you on that in a day or so when I have an afternoon off)

Does the motor run at idle when partially or completely choked? After the motor is started and warm up. It would kill if partially choke or completely choke the motor.

What are the compression figures for the engine? Have not tested the compression, will have to buy compression meter.

How did the motor run before you rebuilt the carb? Not sure, will try to get information back to you in a couple a days

I just got an 1968 Evinrude 6hp service manual for this year and model motor in the mail from ebay.

Thanks....will get back to you in couple of days when I have an afternoon off.

Re: 1968 Evinrude 6hp problem

Sounds like you bought the motor on EBay and it has not run right since you got it. If the seller is a skilled marine mechanic, all of the carb questions that I asked should not be a factor. If the engine has low compression, that could be a factor and the mechanic should have known that and should have disclosed it.

My advice to you is to go back to the seller to resolve these issues, because it appears that you have been sold a motor with problems.

Re: 1968 Evinrude 6hp problem

Was the motor shipped to you? Could be the float is sticking/hanging on the bowl gasket.

The above normal idle setting plus running good at higher speed sounds like the float needle is not quite seating allowing a bit of excess fuel to push through at idle.

Could also be the low speed adjustment. If the Carb was rebuilt but only tank tested the adjustment could be off. Turn the knob in to gently seat. turn it back out about 1 3/4 turns and see if it improves. You should slowly work it in from there until the motor sneezes then back out 1/4 turn.
May also be a points adjustment or other issue.

cajuncook1,
FYI.

You can borrow a compression tester for free at Autozone or Oreilly's auto part stores. The spark tester is cheap, $6-8.

Let us know the compression test and spark test results.

I did contact the seller and awaiting his response.

I'm going to adjust to slow idle adjustment as stated above and see what happens.

Saturday, I'm going to run by Autozone to try and get a compression meter and spark tester.

I'll try to get some information to y'all Saturday or Sunday. Til then:)

Thanks for all the information!!!!!

Re: 1968 Evinrude 6hp problem

Well, I removed the slow idle needle and it looked at little worn. Call up an marine mechanic shop and the gentleman happened to have an old broken down evinrude 6 hp that was a 69 model. He sold me used but good slow idle needle. When I got home I reseated the needle gently and turn it out 1 3/4 and slowly adjusted it by 1/4 turn and now it idles much better. It no longer kills when rev up and come down quick. :)

I don't think a carb overhaul was done, because of that worn needle. When the seller stated that a carb job was done, he probably meant a general cleaning. So, a carb kit will be needed in the near future.

Thanks alot for all the suggestions and advice. I think I will still follow up with the seller, maybe he will reimburse my slow needle purchase.

I hope father-in-law will enjoy the little motor, so he can get around the lake to do a little fishing.:D

This is a great site and will certainly buy parts and manuals from the site when I can!

Thanks again,
