Hello all of you boat boys. I am a single mother who just bought my first boat. It is an older 80's 16 ft Vanguard with a 70hp Merc outboard. Small enough for me to load and unload by myself with ease and yet big enough and powerful enough to tow my boys around on a tube. I got a very good deal on the boat, but...I got a good deal because the transom has rotted right out and has to be replaced...how do I do that? Where do I start?

Re: Rotted transom

Sorry to hear that, I went thru the same thing years back. As I recall I called a local dealer whom steered me to a fiberglass repair shop that had experience in such things. If it?s any consolation this is a good time of the year for such a repair as it will be some time before you get your boat back Are you in or near a large city?

Re: Rotted transom

Can you tell if the whole thing is rotter or a localized area.

If the outside gelcoat is good, there is a chance that rotten wood can be shelled away.

Check the restoration sections on this site and MAS Epoxy has video tutorials on this subject.

Get yourself educated on the subject before dealing with a repair shop.

Respect you for getting involved with your boys!!

Re: Rotted transom

Welcome to iboats.

I will move this to the restoration section. Depending on where you are located and your friends available to help..... will determine how easy or time consuming the repair will be. Not trying to scare you away but where there is rot on one end of the boat ....that is usually an indicator of other areas that need to be inspected.
