Hi folks. "Newbie" to the forums here, but an avid boating enthusiast who reads posts routinely. Got a little dilemma here so thought I'd reach out for some input.

I found an interesting quote from this post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=181262

That heat sending unit is actually the knock sensor. Usually it;s installed on a Tee and the plug is mounted on the side of the tee. Be sure to hold the tee solid with a wrench when loosening the plug or you WILL break the threads off the tee where it goes into the block.

Well Don, funny you should say that. While winterizing my port 2005 Volvo 5.7L, same way done for past few years, the unimaginable happens. The right side T-fitting that the knock sensor mounts to breaks off from the engine block. I was holding it with a crescent wrench, as I've done several times before (like on the others installed) but this little SOB must have twisted on me.

1. What are your recommendations on the "best" possible way to remove? I'm thinking an easy-out, since nothing external to try and grip (with vice grips).

2. Should I try and soak with penetrating oil prior to attempting removal? And would it be best to try to remove in the cooler weather (when metal shrinks) as compared to warmer?

3. Can't find part number for this, but I'm guessing it's the same fitting as the one listed for the "hot water heater" connection (my starboard engine has that set up).

4. And finally, worst case scenario but if I screw up taking the broken piece our, I should be able to tap a new hole no? I'm not a machinist or savvy engine tech, but do know my way around mechanically.

The following picture (borrowed from this post http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=285815 shows what I'm talking about, though mine looks a little "newer" and the engine is of course still in the boat ;)

Ayuh,...It's just a common brass fitting available at most Hardware Stores....
An easy-out should work Just Fine...
Just be care, there's a back Wall to that cavity,... Use the Right sized easy-out...
If ya screw it up, it's 1/4" pipe thread..
Again, don't run it In too deep....
I'd put it together so the Drain is straight out,+ the sensor is on the deadend...

Wow, what are the odds I'd have the same exact problem? While trying to open the drain fitting on the end of the 'T' the entire brass fitting broke off and left the threads in the block. Must be a pretty weak piece, because I was hardly using a helper bar on it.

I'm wondering how the original poster's repair turned out and if anyone else could comment on the best way to remove those threads. I'm leary of EZ-Outs, but it seems like the right tool for this job and I assume a keep point is to keep metal shavings from getting in there where they would likely damage the impeller or other components.

Anyone want to take a shot at this?

The best thing you could do is start a new thread of your own. People read and answer the first post only in most situations, or it get's so confusing that no one knows who is replying to whom
