too much oil from injector

The oil injector for my 2000 50HP Johnson pumps so much oil during start up that the engine does not start for a long time and when it dies, it smokes terribly for several minutes. At idle the engine is rough, yet at higher RMP it smooths out. How do i fix this problem short of disconnecting the oil injector?

The fix is typically to replace the OMS pump, although some here are fond of getting rid of the oil injection and just mixing the oil yourself in the tank. Sounds like a check valve in the pump on the oil side is hanging open and allowing the float bowls to fill with oil, especially if it clears up after a few minutes run time.

First sign I got of my VRO failing was it over oiling. You have an OMS pump but it still could be the issue.

Do you have a fuel restriction? That wii make the pump over oil

Air leaks in the gasoline lines will cause over oiling. It will be at all speeds, BTW. Can you determine if the problem is only at idle, or at all speeds?

This is correct also.

The problem is at start-up. I do not have the ability to measure fuel pressures and vac vacume readings.

jjhallowell: That is a good reason not to replace, or take thing's apart.

Yes, I know my level of incompetence with boat engines. I was hoping it might have been solved by an adjustment. From everyone's postings, I believe I'll take it top an engine mechanic .
Thanks
