I have a 1963 evinrude 5.5 that I finally got working well and now I Crunk it up and let it idle for about 10 min. and it felt really hot to me It is pumping water but not enough.. I see videos on youtube and theres is spitting more than mine. the impeller is brand new.. and the water pumping out was pretty warm to.. So if you change the impeller and your still not pumping water right whats the next thing to clean/fix to make the problem go away

Re: Water pump help

Are you testing it in a bucket or pail or on the boat? Most folks don't submerse the engine deep enough to test. Water should be half way up the leg or so. Also, on the '63 I think you have a thermostat. You might want to remove it and test it in a pan of boiling water and a thermometer to see at what temp it opens. Or just remove it and run it to see if it's running cooler.

The thermostat is the triangular thing at the top of the head. Held on with 3 screws.

Attached is a pic from a 6hp engine. Should be the same or very similar. The thermostat is #22.

Oh, and you want the water a good 2-3" above the joint between the LU and the exhaust tube. Above the water pump.

Ok yea it looks exactly like that. alright i'll give it a loook.. The fact still remains thermostats open or not the motor should pee more water than it is.. the motor pee's regardless i think

Re: Water pump help

Yes, the motor will pee regardless as there's a bypass, but it will run hot as it will not flow around the head if it is not opening. It will only cool the exhaust cover.

I have an older 5.5 also I think its a bit older then yours. I was just wondering if you had to pull the powerhead or just drop the lower unit to replace the impeller? Thanks.

On all the 5.5's the power head had to be removed to drop the LU. The 7.5's also. A pain in the butt!
