I have a used sears 5HP outboard and I dont know anything about it.I could really use some help.I need to find out the year and the make. The decals are off of the side & it looks like its been repainted a couple of times.
Cassis is 217-58990,Serial is 100-799, It is a tecumseh and there is a litlle tag on the side of the motor that has,T-643-15 & below them is 6242299.I have looked everywhere, Sears say they dont have records that go past the 80's for this chassis.I dont know the fuel mix or anything else. This is my first outboard but for the price I couldnt beat it.I should try to avoid garage sales maybe.Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

It is a 1970 motor built by Eska, using a Techumseh Lawn Mower Engine. I suppose they probably said 50:1 fuel mix, but I don't subscribe to that.

It is air cooled like any other lawn mower, but the exhaust housing/leg is water cooled by a pump. If the pump doesn't work, it is just like the engine is sitting on a hot stove and it will get hot as blazes too.

Re: Sears Outboard

Fuel ratio is 24:1 for 70-73 motors.Use TCW3 rated oil .
Gearcase uses standard outboard gear lube.Plug is Champion J13Y set at .030.Present day number may be superseded but the same plug.
These motors can be problematic;hopefully yours will perform for you.

Thanks for your help, I am more of a computer person myself so I hope I dont have much problems with it.The people I bought it from said it worked good but I dont know for sure. When I got it home It started rite up and ran it for about ten seconds and shut it off.I knew it was air & water cooled but that is all I know.

lots of debate on this, but I believe the recommendation is to use oil designed for air cooled motors on the air cooled motors I think the TCW3 oil is for water cooled motors that run at a lower temp than air cooled motors.

I think it has more to do with the kinds of fuel today than the air or water cooled. I run all the same gas oil mix in all my 2 strokers, chain saw snow blower weed wacker and so on. they all get 50:1 TC-W3 and all run fine. Oh yea my outboard too...

Re: Sears Outboard

Fear not as I have droned on about before All my aftermarket service manuals suggest outboard oil some specificaly TCW oil in air cooled outboards. My container of Citgo TCW3 rated oil lists about every type of 2 stroke motor. You won't be wrong using any quality 2 stroke oil.

Re: Sears Outboard

don't know as I said much debate, but if your using oil you are better off than not using it.

Re: Sears Outboard

Hey all,
I have a 69 Sears/ Eska that I was given and am presently getting ready for debue on the resivoir. My manuel ( came with it!) says ONLY use 30 wgt outboard and warns against multi viscosity oils which will void the pitiful warranty. I have a few open containers which are far from new but all say tcw3 which scares me! I have found in motorcycles oil does matter.

Thanks, Art

I suspect the warning concerning multi viscosity oils has more to do with their detergent additives than anything else. If you can still find it any 2 cycle should function as intended using NON-detergent 30 or 40 wt. oil. The key lies in the capitalized NON-detergent.

But we have the TCW-3 oils today that are especially formulated for marine 2 cycle engines so there is no reason to use anything else unless you are just more comfortable using oil formulated specifically for air-cooled engines. The only truly critical factor is using enough of it! You'll never go wrong using the fuel/oil mix recommended by the design engineers! Oddly perhaps they know more than those who insist that 50/1 works just fine in everything.:(
