Good motors, tough. As tough as any 460 or 454 IMO.
Like most Ford modular motors I think they have been known to blow a spark plug or 2 out due to bad/insufficient threads.
Kind of a bad design courtesy of Ford. Would not be a deal breaker for me as there are many tried, true and economical fixes available.

Good transmissions, axles, body cans and transfer boxes on those trucks as well.

I have an 02 F250 with the V8. No real problems with it. Mileage is about 10.
My buddy has a 99 F250 with the V10. Also no real problems. He gets about 14 MPG on his.
We both tow about 11000 lbs to the race track, and he can kill me going up a hill.
If i could do it again id get the V10.

I have an F250 Super Duty with the V10. I love it. I get acceptable mileage. 15MPG highway & just under 12MPG towing a 2500# boat. I have a 5000# boat I seldom haul, but it hauls it fine. I have no idea what the mileage towing it is, nor do I really care.

They are good motors. Especially strong for a Gasser... I understand that they are easy to work on, but I have not heard of any real problems...

Milage is about hte same as a 6.0 PSD in an F-350 dually, so it is not all that bad...

I have the 6.0PSD in an '03 Excursion and it is a beast. Can get 20 MPG highway, and anywhere from 15-18 around town dependign on how hard I drive...

Some of the early V10 engines did blow out spark plugs, most got new cylinder heads when it happened, other than that they really are a good engine. I work at a Ford Super Duty dealer. If you could find an old 7.3L diesel that would be a good one to get also.

I'm sure they're similar to the Dodge V-10. Pro's - torque, torque and more torque. Con's - gas mileage, of course. I was getting 8mpg when towing with the Dodge.... Although it didn't matter the weight of what I was towing. Real heavy loads, it stayed at 8... It was a 3/4 ton too...

I have driven both the ford v-10 and the dodge v-10, the dodge is far better being a 8.1l compared to the ford 6.8l. i have a ford excursion with the v-10 and it will pull anything you want plus 8 people. Get the excursion you will be happy with it.

We tow with a 2003 E-350 15 passenger van, V10 AND LOVE IT. Trailers are a 24' pontoon boat and a 30' travel trailer. Pulls both without issue. It's quiet, has gobs of torque. Beware the early 2 valve motors. 2003 and up the spark plug holes have more metal which cured the plugh blow out issue. I have heard that some of the early 3 valve motors were suspect as well. I think you'll be very pleased with the V10.

Re: Ford V-10, pros and cons????

Can't go wrong with that set-up. The only reason why I decided to go power stroke over the V10 is longevity and overall pulling power. Right now I only need to pull my 21' center console but I know Ill be able to pull a 26' loaded with no problem. I intend on keeping the truck for a very, very long time and I believe that diesels will outlast a gas engine. That is the only debate you really need to settle the way I see it; how long do you want it to last? That V-10 will do anything you want it to and the only thing that will be affected by weight of load is your gas mileage but I am sure, just like me and anyone else that owns a FULL size truck, you aren't too worried about mileage (Thats not why we buy trucks!!!).

Re: Ford V-10, pros and cons????

do you have to pull the body off to pul heads??? i had a 97 f-250 light duty with the 5.4 and blew the spark plug out, i had tried to change the spark plugs and thought i couldnt get to it and apparently i did and it back all the way out and blew the last thread. well i was able to get it threaded back in but when i thought i had to pull the head i found out you had to pull the cab.
