Hey guys thinking about doing a repair/possible overhaul of an 9.5hp Evinrude project with my son. Without spending a dump load of money, what would you consider a must have list of tools for beginner to repair/rebuild an outboard? Your suggestions are very much appreciated!!!!

Thanks!

A socket set, combination wrench set and screw driver set, will take care of pretty much everything. If you're working on a 9.5hp, that should prep you for the easier to work on models.

Besides what been posted the most used "tool" in my shop is a set of Snap-on 1/4 drive swivel sockets and 16 inch extension. Makes getting the shifter pin screw in/out real easy on a V-4 crossflow.

adding to the excellent list,
a spark gap tester or timing light,
gap tester being the preferred tool from any auto part store.

A freind that knows the engine better than you and you can "Watch and Learn"...

Seriously, this is a great start. I have a Dt115 Suzuki and I have not run across anything on it yet that I did not have a tool for...

As mentioned:
Sockets (standard & Metric)
Wrenches (both again)
Proper extensions, swivels, etc.
Torx and Hex Sockets (maybe)
Screwdrivers
Pliers
etc...

When rebuilding, threadlock and antisieze... You should know when to use each...

How big a box do you have?

After you squeeze in that flywheel puller, would it be any room left? LOL!

Just kidding. Enjoy.

lol.....I see i will need a trunk instead of a tool box:eek:!!! I'm making a list of all these items and get what I can now and the absolute necessary and expand from there.

Please, if there are any more suggestions, by all means please give you generous input. Grasshopper here needs all the pointers he can get!

Thanks

Re: What are useful tools for inexpensive outboard repair tool box

You've pretty much got a decent list now.
Other things like a bench vice are handy to have in your workshop, a dremel comes in handy at times with a carbide disk.

Outboards are so simple to work on, no exotic tools needed.

Someone already mentioned the impact screwdriver, thats very usefull for stubborn screws, sears sells them for less than $25.

I have the spark gap tester and the timing light..I found the gap tester better for diagnosing a weak coil.

Often overlooked, but at times you'll be glad you had it. A digital camera. When you come across a problem that may be difficult to describe, take a pic and post it here. A picture is worth a thousand words...

If you're really looking to save some dough, you can pick up some of these tools from autoparts stores for free. Of course they do expect a cash deposit, but you get that back once you return the tool.
