I have a twin Engine. i have two of everything. my Tilt on both of my engine was working before.

I started remove some intake manifold on both engine and replace some Riser and clean exhaust manifold. that's when this tilt problem start giving me problem.

i have try to put metal on the solenoid on one of the engine for the tilt so i don't have to push the switch, just to test it directly without the switch but still the same result. all i hear is click.. so i replace the motor and install it with the proper gasket... i have install the ground, i even grind the metal so it will be shiny.. still the same.. so i remove the TILT system and SOKE the clutch in ACETONE. and install it after cleaning.. still the same... i check the ground from the engine to the battery. even grind the battery terminal shiny for good contact. still the same... i remove all the wire from the started where all the wiring lead to some solenoid and grind it shiny. still the same.. i have check the fuse under the dashboard. still the same..

above mention is for the #2 engine.. but the #1 engine is doing the same thing. but this time. the TRIM will not work... i Did not put no metal object to any of the solenoid on this #1 engine. #1 just click on the TILT. but working on the TRIM..

I need serious advice. i cant seem to get this to work.. i read the boat many times .. iam thinking iam only having electrical problem but iam lost of where to start now. i have try all i could...

question: Clutch on the TILT. does any of the CLUTCH parts move.. because my seems to be STACK together....?? also when the clutch is remove from the housing.. will the WORM GEAR be able to move ? because my is not moving...

Re: Tilt Problem

hey longstand,
I have the same problem with my 85 omc. I was wondering when you take the tilt motor off, can you manually move the outdrive up and down? I just talked to one of the guy that has a 79 omc and he said that you can manually move the drive. But there is a lock to the drive. It locks the drive in place, maybe the lock wont disengage. I dont know.. I need to check on my when I get home today. Do you know if there is a lock on your and where is it?

Re: Tilt Problem

when you take apart your tilt gear, can you move your drive up and down?
what he said is that the lock keep the drive in it position. I toke my motor off too and it did not move freely... but I have not remove the tilt gear... so I dont know if my gear is the problem.
your motor is new?
have you try just running the motor straight to the battery to see if it move you drive up and down?

Re: Tilt Problem

I see.. well yes when i have remove the TILT Gear. i had to remove the SPUR Gear.. the circle gear that connects to the Sterndrive which turn it up and down....

Yes the Sterndrive move up and down. is because there is nothing holding it. the gear is remove. so NO Duhh. LOL..

and yes the motor is brand new..

and yes i have test the new motor on a table .. and it works perfect...

i think there is something Electrical.. its killing me .. i cant figure it out.. ones you know anything let me know...

Re: Tilt Problem

Have you install the motor and by past everything else and just connect the motor to the battery and see if the drive move up and down? without connect it to the selinodes and switches.

Re: Tilt Problem

I found my problem with the tilt. My problem is that the gear got stuck. Not the square one with the 4 bolts but the one that stuck out with the 3 bolts which connected to the head of the motor. the rod that come out has with the cylinder gear looking. There are 2 pins on the rod to slip into the cylinder gear. The pins slipped out and caught with the gear below which cause it not to move. I had to push the pins in so both ends are equal so when the motor spin the rod the pins do not get caught to the gear in the box below with the 4 bolts. Hope this is the same problem you have....
Good luck

Re: Tilt Problem

yes, the first image you have. You removed the 3 bolts and a triangle piece, right? You will see a circle. Use flat head screwdriver that is flat enough and strong enough to pride around it. The circle is a cap end. Hope that help.

Re: Tilt Problem

no, dont hit with a hammer. just pride with a screwdriver. yes my look exactly like your.... another thing is that you can try to lift your outdrive up the will give it a little force to force out the cap. yes the is an "o" ring around the cap, but it is black rubber so it should be easy to come out. try it.

Re: Tilt Problem

I had to remove the motor to reline the hammer blow, because you will pull it out if you pull on the rod when you take out the worm gear. you might want to see if you can get a rubber seal or something or water will be able to get in. so was the pins the problem?

Re: Tilt Problem

Yes. it was the same problem.. also i did not put any Gasket on the Cover with the 4 bolt. so it was to Tight and it will not move freely. but it works now. thanks. and no i did not have to remove the motor to make it work again. i just made sure it was on the hammer blow and install everything back..

works great
