well I think I my have got shafted. I traded a boat with a guy the other day he cranked his motor sounded good I cranked mine sounded good. We do the trade. I crank it up the next day at home w/ muffs and put it in gear:(
this thing does not sound good. it does shift forward and reverse but has a rattling sound.

I think the lower end is shot! I dont know much about boat motors but I know it should not sound like that. I stoped the motor and shook the prop it had no play in it

will the prop still shift and turn if the lower unit is bad?/

what can I check?

Can you drop the boat in the water and test drive it?
I've never put a boat in gear on land but I would expect it to sound very different with no load on the prop or water to absorb sound.

The pontoon is not in a good condition to tow. Maybee I can get a 55 gal. bucket to run it

I ran my 25 hp Johnson in gear in my driveway. With no bad sounds.
I'd love for that to be the cause of the noise.

If the lower unit is bad what do you think a rebuild would cost??
Never had a thing like this done.

Whether a gearcase was noisy with no load would not bother me except that I would be pretty impatient to run it under load.

Just a thought but it would be a good idea to change the lower end oil. Drain it into a clean margarine tub then look and feel for grit/metal filings.
Water tub is good but make sure it's deep enough for the impeller. I've done this by putting a garbage can on top of a couple concrete blocks.

That is a great idea. I will check the oil.
An a big trash can will be easyer to get my hands on then a 55 drum.

I hope this thing is not broken!!!

This cannot be emphasized enough. You need to have it submerged further than just the water intakes. The whole pump needs to be submerged and it sits a good bit above the intakes. I failed at this once and ended up taking my boat for a wasted trip to the shop thinking I had a cooling problem. Lesson learned.

Re: tohatsu trade trouble

well also when I had the muffs on running it the water did not **** out the side.
I dont know if that was dew to it not being in the water or the water pump is not working.

my old 25hp johnson always pumped out water with the muffs on.

This thing has got me worried!! I think I got ripped off.:(
Im going to try and get it to the lake soon. but I have a bad feeling.

Does anyone have a PDF manual for this motor?

Re: tohatsu trade trouble

Well I drained the lower end today. It was half water half oil. Not good!
I did put a magnet in the oil and there was no metal.
I flushed with 80w-90 then filled the lower unit. I will have to see how this goes. Sure glad I drained it.
I'm wondering how water could get inside the lower unit?
I see no crack in the case and when fill has not leaked anywhere.
The prop does have damage. Can it get past the prop in that way?

Bad seals most likely. Hopefully not a bent prop shaft which can eat seals....

Re: tohatsu trade trouble

Well I put the boat in the water today

I got the water pump to spit out also:D
This was done by using my air compressor to blow air back through the small hole. After that the water started pumping out.

I also changed the spark plugs out. One of them was not even firing (it haD NO GAP) NGK is what was in the motor but auto zone only had auto lite. Will these be ok in a tohatsu motor?

The motor ran but I had to give it gas very slowly so that it did not die.
I think that it may need somthing added to the gas clean out the motor.
(any ideas?)

I may need to change the gas in the tanks (it came with the boat)

I have to still pull the plug on the lower unit to see if water got back in. Then I will need a new prop mine is all chewed up.

Re: tohatsu trade trouble

The spark plug brand is no importance as long as Autolite plugs matches same NGK compatibility for Tohatsu model engine, regap if needed, probably 1.0 mm tight gap, check tech specs. Perform a complete carb & pump clean up just in case, change existing gas/oil in tank for new, should work properly.

Happy Boating
