It will start but will dye out after a bit...
Any suggestions for this 'non-mechanic' person will be sincerly appreciated.

Thanks
David

sounds like your running out of fuel.. start it and pump the bubble on the line and see if it stays running if it does then your fuel pump is bad... try cleaning the carb and buying a carb kit.. normally run about 20-25 bucks for all new gaskets, seals, inlet needle, and float.. read this for some help.. top secret thread loaded with how to's for help...... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013

Re: what year motor is this?

It's a 1978 6hp.

First question that has to be asked: Is the tank venting properly?

As said try pumping the bulb. That'll keep it running if the fuel pump is defective, or if there is an air leak into the fuel line. (Connector favorite for air leaks!)

Will it stay running if you choke it a bit? If it does it points to a dirty carb.

Is the slow running adjustment mixture correctly set? See http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

It is always worth starting by checking/cleaning/resetting or simply replacing the plugs. Type now recommended are QL77JC4 gapped at 0.030".
Also check the sparks.

I think though this is fuel/carb related

I had it running ok yesterday, got back and it died when i got into the channel.
I can 'choke-it' and it would start back up.
I tried adjusting the 'rich-lean' knob on the front and a 'set-screw on the carb. Since I don't have a manual for this, i'm now confused. If you can help further, I would appreciate.

Thanks;
David

I did put new plugs in it yesterday and it fired up fine.
I may have messed up adjusting the rich-lean knob on the front and turning the screw on the carb.

Any suggestions you provide is sincerely appreciated.

Guess I just want to get it going right. I have no confidence with it right now. Hope you can understand. If you have any suggestions on resetting it, I would be sincerely appreciated. Any kind of manual page would be appreciated too.

Hope to hear from you.

Spend $30.00 & buy a manual! Best money you'll ever spend on your motor. I've saved thousands in 6 years of boat ownership.

Default for the low speed needle is: Turn needle clockwise until it seats lightly, then back it out counterclockwise 1 1/2 turns. Slowly turn clockwise until rpm has noticable drop, then counterclockwise until highest rpm is reached.

Set the slow running screw to 1? open as advised (see the link to Joe Reeves' instructions for a little more detail .... once you get it running you can follow the instructions in the first section for setting it more precisely)

Ensure that the tank vent is clear ... or simply take the cap off

Try playing with the choke to see if that will keep it running ... If it does then you probably need to clean the carb jets.

Try pumping the fuel line bulb. If that keeps it running you either have an air leak into the fuel line or a defective fuel pump or maybe some restriction in the fuel pick up or fuel line.
