i recently boat a used boat.
1999 bayliner 1850 with mer-cruiser 4.3 v6.

it started to have a starting problem.
took out the starter.
the fly wheel is missing two teeth and the starter doesnt catch.

could some one tell me if i could get a starter out of a chevy astro or blazer since they have the 4.3 or are the number of teeth different

i looked it up theres a 153t and a 168t (i think)

what flywheel is used for boats.

and if i have to replace the fly wheel

will i have to pull the motor or be able to remove the stern drive.

help help help

the guy i bought it from said he replaced the starter with the automotive one for a 4.3 v6 thinking it wouldnt make a difference. could that have cause the missing teeth

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard...

Automotive starters are an electrical No- No in boats,.. You need a Marine rated starter..
what flywheel is used for boats.

It's determined by the Starter,...
Straight across bolt pattern is the 12" flywheel...
The Staggered bolt pattern is the 14" flywheel...
and if i have to replace the fly wheel
will i have to pull the motor or be able to remove the stern drive.

You don't need a Flywheel,.... You need it's Ring Gear... About $50. or less at Napa...
Yes, the Motor has to come Out,... The drive has to come off to get the motor out....
