I bought this motor in the spring:

here is a picture of it:

It was very reliable. At one point when I was having trouble with the motor on my pontoon, I put it on the transom as a kicker so I wouldn't get stuck out on the lake. I never used it thank goodness. I just went out in the garage and tried to start it. No luck. NO SPARK!

Now I think it did get pretty wet on the pontoon.

So how do I go about diagnosing the deeper problem now? I took the tank off, pulled the plug, grounded it against the cylinder and spun the flywheel. I would usually see an intermitant spark, but nothing.

Can someone tell me how to proceed from here? Thanks so much.

start with cleaning the points. You will need to pull the flywheel on it to get to them. I would suspect them to be dirty and once cleaned you should have good spark again

Bingo! The water and non use caused a light layer of rust to build up. I have a strong spark now. I'm sure when I reassemble it tommorrow it will run like a champ.

Thanks FR!

For your future information, your Sea King was made by Chrysler (former West Bend company). One of the few air cooled outboards worth a hoot in my book.
