Ok...so my battery died and I had to remove it to charge it. But when I put it back, Like a idiot -I put it in backwards. I dunno why, just got the wires mixed but...the reason I knew it was backwards was because the stereo wouldnt work. So I put the battery in the right way. The engine started right up but the tach dosent work now and also it seemed like the boat was running rough. Can anyone tell me what problems I might have and what I should be checking when you reverse the leads on a battery? Also any advice on repairing my Tach would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

You fried your rectifier. Your charging system is not currently working.

You can fry the rectifier that easy ? and that stops the tacho working as well ?

I believe the rectifier isn't a terribly expensive or difficult part to replace.

Re: 90 HP Johnson problem

some are watercooled and might require a gasket
its not hard at all
if its a ois you might have to unplug some stuff on top of the motor.
my 150 is like that.
keep running a damage rectifier is actualy a fire hazard.

Re: 90 HP Johnson problem

I had this go on my 90, it's an 83 with the 3 wire. I went to an electronics store and picked up a $7.00 30 amp rectifier , cut the leads off the old one, crimped on some leads and used the existing mounts to mount it up. Good as new.

Unless you wanna buy the fancy $60 unit, totally up to you, I'm cheap :D

Mine isn't water cooled so I could go this route, it was the simpler pre water cooled design that just bolted to the powerhead. Other people have done this replacement on OMC and Merc with great success.
