Re: Was it something I said?

welcome! For the checklist, drain plug, all the stuff you need in case of an emergency, some drinks, and some snacks.

Online safety courses should be fine. Boating is a lot of common sense, but the safety course is helps. Also, be sure you know all the regulations of where you boat and common courtesies. Then you should do fine.

Subliminal, I like your list. Looks like we have common goals on the water.

I live in Howard Co. Md, but recently bought a summer house in Ocean Pines Md. on a canal, 2 minutes to the open bay, (Isle of Wight and Assawoman). The house had an 8,000lb. boatlift, so I did what any normal guy would do...bought a boat. It's winterized at a local marina, so I feel no need to tell the wife just yet

Boat: 2005 Azure AZ210 deck boat low hours, all the optional goodies for $15,500. Kept on lift and shrink wrapped in winter.

Right on, we've been thinking about a place in OP too.

Well, I really only fish. So I just try to keep all my things together in one place. Then I can just grab and go and don't have to worry about remembering what to bring.

Keep it simple. Always seems to work best.

I think a checklist is a great thing to have, a written one to start will become a mental "instinct" after a short while. A boaters safety class as mentioned is a great idea too. Nothing can replace plain ole practice, even though the season is all but over now would be a wonderful time for you to learn the ropes. Not many people on the ramps, docks etc. As for your checklist start with the basics then customize from there. Drainplug, gas, cell phone, water, run blower, check all fluids before and after trip, tow vechicle in top shape, spare for boat trailer, insurance/reg. papers, fishing licence if applicable, bow lines, life preservers for all, etc. Maybe keep a folder in the boat or truck to jot things boat related down in like a captians log. everything can come in handy when starting out how deep to back trailer in, best starting procedure for "my" boat, ramp fees at different places, things I noticed on the water that I want to look at home, guage readings on the boat. It may sound like a lot but it will become second nature pretty quick and the more informed/attentive you are the more enjoyable your time on the lake will be oh and welcome aboard.

OK, a clue.....it appears I should remove a thing called drian plug after each use? And re-install before next use, yes?

Ocean Pines is pretty cool....albeit an older population. You can get great deals down there on the water. We got a foreclosure for a steal.

I'm not sure how the "view counter" works and whether the views are always active readers. On many forums you may have 20-40 views to a reply.

Also the boards would be choked if every view prompted a "hi there" or "me too" or "I don't know" response; we may be better served if everyone acts like they're from Minnesota and not Alabama!

The active traffic is in boat topics, non-repair engine and stupid human tricks.

So, are you saying that it takes to much server space to be nice? Then I will change my location to NJ and not post any welcome aboards...

Don't get up tight, I am in a jokign mood today... and just trying to have a little fun...

To all have a great day....

Absolutely Yes to the drain plug. Another hint. I carry a little notepad and pencil in my glove box so If/when I find that I forgot something. I can write it down and put it in the boat for next time.

For the best experience without a doubt is to not forget to put in your drain plug before you get her wet and do not forget to put up your outdrive bfore you pull her out of the water. If you don't it'll ruin your day everytime. But as far as a check list you'll get use to it what to and what not to take but do take the safety course. WELCOME ABOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Aboard!

The Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department often has boating safety courses at the Northside Park (around 127th street in OC).

The one I took the kids to was a 3 day course given by some guys from the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

I just checked the CG Auxiliary website, and it looks like there's a Boating Skills and Seamanship class starting this Saturday in Annapolis.

Re: Was it something I said?

I live on my boat, so generally an outing really only requires the addition of more people, more beer, and making sure theres plenty of juice in the deep cycle, LP gas for the grill and gasoline in the tank.

One thing I never need to think about, but most should, is making sure you have a proportionate number of PFD's to people, and in the correct sizes...
BTW, that ratio would be 1:1.

My boat has 27 type II PFD's (your standard vest) ranging from babies to adult, and 3 type IV's (throwable's).
