Sure you can. Heck just get some vent hose for a clothes dryer and throw it on there. :D

I would say NO! Why would you risk getting stranded or a fire...

To be serious for a moment, I think if you were a steamfitter or a rubber
materials expert and could positively match up the material as being
equivalent or superior, with a level of expertise that would hold up in a
courtroom, then it might make sense. But if you wouldn't be able to
defend your choice on scientific grounds, after your boat burns and kills
some kids onboard, then this would be the wrong place to save a few
dollars. If cost is a problem, are there approved aftermarket parts you
can purchase online?

The long and short of the answer is if you don't use the correct hi-temp tubing you run the risk of them melting, especially if you overheat for any reason, and having a fire in the engine compartment.
So its your call.

Scientific reason yada!yada! Horse puckey! The friggin' cost for marine parts are so high it's flat out highway robbery. I've been using 'closet bend' plumbing pipes for elbows and the rubber connectors for over a decade and over 1200 hrs with no problems. The old merc cast-iron elbows used to cost about $60. I used to get them for $10.

Remember, these parts are 'injected' with the raw water from the risers. Inboards use fiberglass exhaust tubes and mufflers in some applications without problems.

Common sense goes a long way in saving the high cost of 'marine' parts...it's good to check first, though.

Last time I checked fiberglass has a much greater flash point than rubber, but hey do what you want. I guess its pretty much impossible for the for the raw water injection to ever fail on "these Mercs". (Or is it???)

The materials are the key, what safety factor is built in. What if the raw water flow is interrupted, how long can the wrong stuff last? There is also heat soak once the engine is off, the materials need to be able to survive many cold-hot-cold cycles.

wow.. i never realize that marine boot are able to stand all this condition. i thought ordinary rubber will be able to withstand heavy heat.

i guest i just purchase the marine style boots

Since everyone has jumped on your case about it, I guess I'll offer this. When I removed my exhaust boots they were quite thick, so make sure you find a replacement with some decent sidewall to it. As for safety, I have no idea if the rubber used by Merc is specially made to prevent fire in the case of overheat. Either way, we're talking rubber, here. No rubber stands up against heat, Merc or not.

If it means the difference between boating and not, I'd do it. Just try to order the correct one when you can. You can always buy one used (junk yard or ebay) as well. It's just rubber, and my boots are 19 years old and still kicking.

It is your boat, you can do as you wish.

I would bet that there is a formula and process involved, more like a tire, and not just molded rubber.

Well, no...

Natural rubber is good to about 130 degF. There are rubber compunds that are engineered for use to 500 degF. I'm not saying they make marine parts out of them, just that "rubber" is not as simple as it once was.
