Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

Bought this 1997 Scout with Yamaha 150. Apparently the digital gas gage was never connected because there is a factory installed analog gage. Being the anal person I am, I would like the digital gage to work also.

Can I connect the fuel sender leads from the digital gage to the fuel sender in addition to the leads already connected for the analog gage?

I welcome any advice.

Re: Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

I would not think you could.
The sending unit is usually a variable resister and the gauge sends a voltage to the sending unit and reads the voltage that it gets back.
If you hook up both it would cause problems, but that is just my opinion and I am not an expert on the subject.

Different opinion. You are reading voltage out of the sending unit. Just like reading voltage out of a battery with multiple volt meters, they will all be the same. Just be sure you hook up the wires in parallel, not in series.
Off the topic thought. Remember when digital wrist watches were the rage, everyone had to have them? Could not buy a watch with a face. Where did they all go? Have not seen a digital display watch in years. Same for car dashboards, digital displays did not last long. I always liked to see the needles and hands. regards FRED

Re: Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

Actually the fuel sender puts out a variable resistance (ground) signal, for safety reasons there are no hot wires connected to your fuel tank so you won't be reading any voltage. I've encountered this before with yamaha and suzuki digital guages. In almost all cases the analog gauge will interfere with the digital reading, so you're probably going to have to choose one or the other. To find out its an easy check - just use a jumper wire from the pink (sender wire) on the analog to the pink on the digital - (you should already have power and ground on the digital). Good luck.

The best "digital" gas gauge is the very early version.....a rod or stick that is held with your fingers. ( ;) couldn't help myself; sorry)

Re: Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

Had a 3 rd. cup of coffee and got to thinking. Forget what I said. The yamaha digital might need a dedicated sending unit. I was thinking of a straight 12 volts thru the system but then it occured to me that at least FORD has or had an instrument voltage regulator for the dash instruments that controled the voltage to something like 5 volts. Has to be a reason why the digital portion was not hooked up. I like the stick method. FRED

Re: Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

Fred and All,

Thanks for all the responses. I should know the answer to this myself, as a former ET2.

I believe that Organic Mechanic is correct. The sender sends a variable resistance to the gauge. The sender's resistance will not change with multiple gauges attached, however there may be some unwanted resistance/impedance introduced into the circuit by one gauge that the other gauge cannot deal with.

I think I will just jumper it as suggested and see what happens. Will report back later. Hopefully will not be looking for new gauge/s!

Re: Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

DO NOT
REPEAT
DO NOT hook up a jumper to the pink wire on the digital guage on a yamaha.

fuel send wire on the digital yamaha is white at the guage or white blue if using a European sender.

actally there is a 5V signal on the fuel sender send wire.
former FC2 USN now retired.

Re: Digital AND Analog Gas Gages

yes most senders work off a 5 volt signal. i know i recently repaired my 66 chargers gauges.older cars used a flasher type regulator,it was on half the time off half the time, points would stick and this would burn/overheat guages.radio shack sell 5 volt regul;ator that works great for stepping down voltage, and it a constant 5 volt. also analog gauges are fine for most, but when dealing with such small alternators as most outboars have a digital volt gauge is nice.
