89' Yami 130hp... Good motor or what? Owners?

I have a chance to buy a very clean Yami 130hp. Has anyone had luck with this motor? Anything I should be aware of on inspection out of the norm? I have read about power loss problems and oil pump issues but all seamed to be simple fixes. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined and recently rebuilt a 1973 Johnson 115 and sold it. I guess I'm just looking for a vote of confidence. Thanks

Steel shift rod that will rust and eventually break (If it hasn't already)
Will need to pull the powerhead to replace

Great motor. The '89 has a high performance tuner and lots of power. I have one and have never had to do a single repair outside general maintanence.

89 might be stainless?
Should be a good motor with normal maintenance.
Dirty carbs are the biggest complaint.

Great motor! If you buy it, install fuel/water seperator, use Stabil Marine all the time and learn to drain carbs a couple of times per year...an easy thing after you do it once. Buy Yamaha Manual for that motor and study up on it.
Good Luck!

sdsaw- Anyway to inspect the shiftrod before I buy it? How can I find out if it's SS? Yami techs out there?

iammarcuse- How loud is your motor and what about smoke. The Johnson I had was a loud smoking dragon.

So far I am feeling good about this OB so well see what others have to say. Thanks guys!

Shift rod could be more of a factor if boat was run in saltwater, maybe less if freshwater only, but you could get it checked out to be sure.

You need to look at the front of the lower unit.
There is a small gap where you can inspect the rod.
It tends to look like an hourglass as it deteriorates.

It is a bit louder than a 115 because of the exhaust tuner. Smokes the same as most other 2 strokes. Nothing too gross.

as I said in another thread;

I have run a 130 hp V4 since 1998. 500-600 miles per year, mostly boat is fully loaded. 10% ethenol as of late.

Changed the plugs once
Cleaned the Red Sealant out of the carbs once
Changed the lower unit oil once
Changed the oil lift pump once

Pretty much trouble free, one hint is don't over prop it, they like to rev more than they like to lug.

I love mine.
