have a mercury 50 hp outboard, not sure of the year but numbers are 9b114042 if anyone can help with that. second, i replaced the water impeller, and when idling it will pee strong, the dwindle to a dribble, then it will go strong again and repeat the cycle. water is so hot you cannot hold your hand in it. when in gear, the stream remains strong. do i have a problem or is this normal?/

Sounds like it's doing just fine, the thermostat is working. The water coming should be 120 degrees so it will burn your hand a little. I have two merc outboards and as long as the t-stats and the waterpump are working like they should. they only pee when they are hot, or at full throttle.

thanks for the info. today i ran the motor and noted that the top cylinder did seem hotter than the lower cylinders. also where is a thermostat located on this motor?

If the motor is a two stroke, 3 cyl. then it will be on the left side of the engine if you were looking at it from the back. On the left side on the upper portion just infront of the head. Should be a cover with a tube running to the pee hole on the side of the engine.
