The motor on my Mercury is leaking gas out of the lower carburetor. Does this mean I need to replace the reeds, or could it be something else? Help!!

Is it leaking when it's running or when it's off? Either way it sounds like the carb need to be rebuilt, some of the seals and gaskets may be bad, when its running all the gas that comes out should be sucked into the engine, when its sitting and it leaks, usually you have bad seals, or the needle isnt fully closed. You shouldnt need reeds, thats when they backfire and you notice stuff like burned fuel or carbon in the carbs, or just running rough.

It leaks when it is running. It looks like there is no gas getting sucked into the engine from the lower carburator

Is the engine running rough? check the bottem plugs and see if they have oil residue or if they are dry. More than likely if it's not running rough and the plugs have oil residue on them then there is fuel getting in there. It's not that likely that the reeds have frozen up, if that happened then the cylinder effected by that reed block would'nt be working, and there would be a noticable difference in the way the engine runs. I would start with the carb, take it off and inspect it for damaged parts and possibly rebuild it. Does that carb have suction when it's running? Start the motor and put your hand infront of it or listen to suction, if it does then the reeds should be working properly.
