What do you folks think about this new gov't scheme?

The "new" smokes taste like metal, make you cough more, cause headaches and nausea.

I'm curious who is making the money off this and why there isn't very much attention being paid to the new laws. Here in Michigan we can no longer buy normal smokes as of a few weeks ago.

I've heard that not only has the toxicity of the chemical not been studied for long-term effects, but that it's actually more of a fire hazard due to having to re-light and the ashes/cherry fall out more easily.

Just another action by the powers that be that has unintended consequences...when there are obviously real problems that should be addressed first. The loss of tax revenue from folks like me who will be quitting will hurt the states even more, here in Mich that money goes to the schools I believe.

Personally I see it as more reason to quit;), but also don't appreciate the law.

Link to some details about the debacle of a program...

and the possibly harmful chemicals that have been added...

It's my understanding that added chemical is a myth. There are no chemicals but rather thicker paper rings. I'm so glad I've quit. Expensive, nasty little things anyway.

Sounds like a boat!

Seriously though as I've been " contemplating quitting" for quite some time, and these give the opportunity to re-light one a couple times ! Or hot box it if you want to stay lit.
I smoke "Natural " American Spir$$$its and have no complaint on taste, it should and still does taste like a smoke stick. I bummed a Marlboro the other night .....OMG:eek: I know of what you speak...chemicals ...

FSC , well never really any such thing IMO.

Yeah, I know:p Ever seen Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man? Rourke and Johnson? That was my old riding partner and myself (in our minds). Nicknames stuck somehow.

Spirt180 has a good ring though!

Re: Fire Safety Cigarettes (FSC)?!?

They came to WI a couple months ago I know this because my old lady started complaning about them in her $68(WI price) a fricken carton newports.
We railfan in Waukegan on Saturday nights and the cigs are only $48 there so we buy them down there now.

I think the fire safe is a good idea I know when I smoked sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and light up a cig and 2 or 3 times I would wake up with a hole in the sheet or bed and one time even had a burned down little butt still in my fingers. WoW thats insanity and scary, my wife would yell at me she would say she could watch me falling in and out of sleep slowly while smoking. I know alot of folks probably die smoking in bed each year so if it saves a life or 2 that way I guess its good ? Dying in a fire probably a bit easier than dying of cancer I must say.

Seen a few older friends and relatives do that in the past few years and with the prices I had to stop smoking, something I really enjoyed.
I used Chantix and quit smoking while not really wanting too and have not had 1 cigarette since I finished my last pask about 20 months ago. No desire to spend the money or die of cancer even tho I enjoyed smoking cigarettes. Been thru plenty of stress and other cigarette craving situations in that time.
Quitting is your best option. Go ahead, stick it to the man.

Re: Fire Safety Cigarettes (FSC)?!?

I thought cigarette companies already put toxic chemicals into smokes, that caused them to burn faster. Faster burning cigs = more "smoked" per day.
That's why a cigarette will burn completely when left unattended, wheras a lit cigar will just go out.

Maybe they could just remove the toxic burning chemical, to make it safer :)

Just really bizarre to me, with all that we know, about how harmful cigarettes are, yet people continue to smoke.

Enough already.

as a former pack-a-day smoker, for 23 years, i can vouch for the new FSC cigs inducing headaches and nausea. i dont know if they added any new chemicals to the mix they already use, but if you look closely at the cigs you will find rings about 3/4 of an inch apart in the paper. these are where the cig will extinguish itself if you dont constantly puff on it.

watched many people at the ol' waterin' hole have to relight 2 or 3 times because they were talking to someone and the cig burned out at the ring.
you see some funny looks on faces when they try to relight it by sucking the filter extra hard, only to get a mouthful of stale smoke. and man, the language they use when that happens:eek:

just think of the stuff you could by for your boat with the money you save by quitting......and maybe there are some health advantages as well

I roll/stuff my own and haven't bought a pack since Feb. Bought enough to make my own till now for .75 cents a pack! The tobbacco in the bag does not have all the chemicals and crap they put in the factory ones and I have found I cough less, although now I have to decide whether to quit or pay more even for the rolling stock (almost as much as a pack)Oh well, I guess maybe the school kids will have to get along without my tax $$$

Could that be just from the extra effort of having to suck on them? I've known some heavy smokers who would get nausea and headaches from climbing five stairs!

I remember in the '70s, Home Testing (remember Home Testing?) sent me some "smokeless cigarettes." They looked like regular cigarettes, but you drew on them without lighting them and a finely atomized niccotine-laced powder went into your lungs. As I recall, they packed quite a wallop!

Re: Fire Safety Cigarettes (FSC)?!?

no. this was true nausea, not something related to "climbing 5 stairs".

i quit back in january, got tired of feeling that way. many friends still smoke, and still report getting headaches and nausea but now they got used to it so it does not seem to bother them as much. or they just are not strong enough to quit so they make excuses and justifications to keep smoking.

that was the first thing I noticed. packing them before opening the pack is a thing of the past.

at first I was completley against the new paper, but now I have realized I only smoke 3 smokes a day due to all the grief and reduction in satisfaction.

Re: Fire Safety Cigarettes (FSC)?!?

i quit may 1st. and it was partly due to the FSC's. they taste like crap. and the price almost doubled.

i was told that some manufacturers are using the fire resistant chemical in CARPET GLUE in 2 rings on the paper. it will put itself out when it reaches these rings.
