How much does it cost you on avg each year to own your boat?

6 months covered slip rent at $190 per month = 1,140
6 months dry storage at $80 per month = 480
Average amount on Gas per year = 500
Average preventative maint per year = 300
Unexpected maintenace per year (on avg) = 300
Insurance = 600
Gas money from friends = +200
--------------
$3,120 (It costs me each year to have a boat "I do all my own cleaning, hauling, and maintenance.)

I went out 40 times from May 1 to Oct 31. So each outing cost about $78. Was it worth it?????? Damn Right! Actually if you add in beer and food it brings each avg to about $100 per outing. Actually, after thinking about it , its kinda depressing ?

The golden rules of owning any toys are as follows:

1. Never, ever, EVER count your cost per mile
2. See rule number 1

Boats are indeed expensive, but so are most sports. For me, my kids are just coming into that golden age where having a boat is priceless for us.

Give me another 10 years and my kids will be teenagers and won't want to be around us because parents aren't cool.

Actually this is one of our rationalizations for owning a boat. My oldest (21) organized his own houseboat trip this year with friends. He invited us to come out and meet him on the lake . . . and they had a great support boat along already. Boating with his parents has become the way it is done, and we both like it that way . . . ;)

Yes, when my wife tries to bring up how much it all costs I quickly divert her attention. I enjoy the time out on the boat so much, I would pay just about anything to do it. I got that way because my folks brought me up the same way and I hope it continues on with my kids.

Worse is figuring out the cost per pound for the fish you keep.

Actually, not really. Get the younguns into watersports. My 14 y/o would rather spend time with dad now (albeit on the other end of a 55' rope) than every other father of a teenager I know. My kids will actually ask their friends to come out with us!

Re: Think about it ! FUN STUFF

Seems like any decent hobby has the ability to cost a bunch per outing. Golfing can be expensive if you play a nice course and get a cart. Do that twice a week all season, and you can get close to what you'd spend for boating. My other hobby is motorcycles. I have several. One being an expensive European model. Parts are expensive for it. It needs attention more often than my Japanese bikes. And I love taking it to the racetrack and running it. Which can get in to big money. I could have got an older used runabout for the price I paid from my leather suit. I could have got a nice used cruiser for what I paid for my Ducati.

Almost any hobby you do seriously is going to cost you. IMHO, in terms of fun for the buck, boating isn't too bad. Contrary to popular belief, it can be done on a small budget. You just have to be smart, do your own work and not go everywhere at full throttle.

how true.

its all what you make it. Owning my little boat is cheap, but all the fishing gear I "need" is the spendy part.

10 gallons of gas for the outboard $27

1 quart of 2 stroke oil $3

1 light bulb for the trailer $3

new lube for the L/U $9?

grand total $27....

now for the fishing side

new rods and reels, lures, live bait, bait bucket, aerator, = I REFUSE TO ADD IT ALL UP. :p

dont even get me started on all the Ice fishing gear I "need"

Re: Think about it ! FUN STUFF

My costs for a short 11 mile outing last Saturday in a 14' geezer fishing boat: A gallon of gas for the boat, a gallon for the car, 2 bottles of water. The launch ramp in SF is free, the guest dock for a stroll near the farmer's market is free, and the sea lions are free.
