Bad news with my new boat

I posted this in the wrong section, so I will post it here:

I bought a 2001 Glastron SX 175 Volvo 3.0 L

So I drove to Minnesota to get the boat (thanks for the ideas on what to check) Great Boat, in great shape interior, exterior & motor. I had him run the motor on the trailer (we backed it up to a river). So I went home feeling REAL good about things.

I went to take her on her maiden voyage the next day in Pewaukee Lake (good thing I just brought a buddy, not my wife & 2 year old). We put it in the water & ran out to the middle of the lake, the my buddy screamed "STOP". I turn around and there is TONS of smoke coming out of the engine compartment. I turn the motor off, put on a life jacket and start shaking. I called the guy I bought it from & asked if he had any ideas (I was hoping he said he spray painted something and that's what was smoking.) He said the check the hoses for the water intake, maybe he switched them when he hooked everything back up. Yes, he did switch the hoses!

I switched the hoses (with the only thing I had, a penny, in 25 MPH winds) and started back slowly. I got back to shore with the temp gauge still going up (it didn't top out at 250 degress, but it was between 225 & 250).

So, not a great start to my boating life! I'm hoping that I didn't do any serious damage, but I'm bracing for the worst. I'm trying to find someone to check it out thoroughly, compression test, etc. without charging me an arm & a leg. Most people I talk to said for sure the impeller is toast (that would explain why the temp kept going up after switching hoses) but I'm hoping for the best. Wish me luck!

What damage do you guys think I did?

Sorry for the long-winded post but my stomach is in knots and I wanted to tell someone. Thanks!

Curious...had you ever started the boat before you went out on this outing? I know this sounds like shutting the barn door after the horse is gone but it is important. The reason I ask is that maybe he didn't switch the hoses! If you had run it on muffs you would have had the same overheat while on muffs.

Take a picture and show us exactly what hoses you switched around.

I tried to upload a picture, but can't. The hoses are on the far bottom left, if you are looking at the motor from the bench seat. If you go back and up from these hoses, you hit the oil filter.

Nice picture of 3.0 Merc, but how does this help on the 3.0 vovlo with a engine mounted sea water pump.

Take the boat to some has volvo experience and that can fix everything. Smoke coming out the engine compartment is not good. The damage is probably well beyound the average DYI.

Robbyr1;

Here's what I would suggest; Find all of the proper model numbers and serial numbers of your engine and drive. Post back what they are. From there, people here will know what you have (exactly) and be able to direct you better.

In the meantime, here's a link to help you identify your engine/drive;

http://www.4shared.com/file/4853696...y_a_Volvo_Penta_gas_engine.html?cau2=403tNull

Once you figure that out, go to the link below and download your engine and drive service manuals and do some reading.

From the information provided, your problem could be somewhere between minor, and catastrophic :rolleyes:

Sounds a LOT like the raw water pump is toast and you didn't run it long enough or at a high enough power setting when you "tested" it to determine if it was "ok".

The first thing you should do is inspect/replace the raw water pump.

Second, if the pump impeller is indeed destroyed, find all the impeller fragments that are probably now plugging the thermostat.

Third, this should be a lesson to anyone else thinking an idle run will tell you anything about how a boat runs before buying it....

Good advice,
The pump will for sure need replaced if the hoses were reversed.
Pull the thermostat housing and flush out the pieces of the old impeller.
You may have got lucky and no further damage was done.
Look at the big rubber hose coming off the exhaust riser....it may have been cooked also.

My bad...I stopped at the 3.0 in his text. Thanks for the callout!

However...your bedside manner could use a little honing skill.

The suggestions on how to proceed with getting your engine working correctly are good ones. I'm just going to add a different set of recommendations. You should have on your boat: a basic tool kit, some spare parts (belts, hoses, clamps), some duct tape, some black electrical tape, a flashlight, service manuals, manual bilge pump, some wire, motor oil, transmission fluid (for trim tabs and/or power tilt), rustblaster spray,WD40, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuses and lightbulbs. This is just a start; you'll probably add a few other things as you continue boating. Hy
