I just picked up a 80 hp mercury motor for a boat that I have been fixing up. The serial number is 0C123133.I think the model number is MER 1080412GD. This is the biggest motor I have owned. I mostly had john boats with smaller tiller motors. The motor runs ok but think the carbs need some adjusting. The guy I got it from had just cleaned the carbs but I dont think he spent alot of time tunning them. It started right up when I went and looked at it. The problem I am having now is the only way I can get it started now is to squirt a little fuel into the carbs and it will crank right up. After it is warmed up a bit it starts ok. It has the push the key choke and I hear a click but thats all. Should the butterflys open on these whne you push the key in. Other than that it seems to run pretty good. I have not had it on the water yet so I dont know how it will do under load. The motor has oil injection on it which I have never messed with. Always had to mix the oil with the gas. I have heard a lot of people dissconnect them and have had some people tell me they love them. I am looking for a repair manual for this motor but wonder which one will give me the best info. Also looking for people that have had owned this model motor before. I can use some advise. I put up some pictures of the before and after of my boat project. Thanks

It's a primer not a choke, with the bulb pumped up pull the line off the primer and see if there is fuel when you push the primer on the key, it sounds like the fuel is not getting to the engine.

I was doing some reading a came across what they call an Enrichner Valve. There are 2 lines coming off the primer. One goes to the top carb and the other tee's of to the lower 2. The bulb stays good and firm and does not seem to change even aver cranking it over. I will check this tomorrow after work. If there is no fuel fuel in the line is it possible the solenoid is bad even though it it making a clicking noise. If there is fuel present what would be the cause. Last question how does this work. This seems to have just outlets but no inlet. I ask because I have spent 20 years as a Ford Tech but kinda now to boat motors. It is eaiser to diag something if you have a understanding of how it works. Thanks Laddies

You can just back track the system if there is no fuel coming out of the primer (enrichener valve) by pulling hoses back to the carb and checking to see where the fuel stops.

Whole different question than what the post is about, but how did you get your boat to come that clean? I have a 14' Bay Rayder thats white fiberglass also, pretty much looks just like yours and I'm trying to clean it up. If you have any tips please send them along, Thank you.

I did not clean it. I put a new floor down and gave the deck a new paint job. On the motor, I was reading some posts on hard starting. I came across a post that said the motor should not be trimmed up when starting. Right now the boat is backed in my driveway which in on a pretty steep incline plus I cannot trim the motor down all the way without the skeg hitting the ground. When I was on level ground it was starting ok. It seems like I did not have the starting problem until I tried to start it when it was backed in the driveway. Could this be the problem. Going to try it on level ground once the rains stop. Also can someone tell me the correct starting procedure for this motor and also the carburetor adjustment procedure. I am going to order a manual but am trying to decide on which book is best but just wanted to get started on it . It?s a 80 Hp 3 cylinder mercury. Thanks

One other question. How much of the foot shoud be in the motor. I have it set to where the fin on the lower unit is about even with the bottom of the boat.

The cavitation plate should be level with the bottom of the boat or just above it.

Well, that kills my chances of my boat looking like yours. You did a AWESOME job on that interior though.

Re: 1989 Mercury 80 HP Help!!!!! Fuel Problem????

I think I got the hard start problem fixed today. I went out to crank up the engine and run it a little but it was the same old thing. Could not get it started. I checked out the enrichment valve like Ladied said by taking the hose off and pushing the key. Fuel came out of the valve but when I pulled on the hose it just came out like it was not hooked up to anything. You could see by the other end of the hose it had cracked and broke. The next trick was to find out where the other end went. I finally had to take the oil tank off and I could see where it hooked to the eng and split into three hoses. I replaced the hose and put everything back together. I set the fast idle up a little and pushed the key in for about 5 seconds and turned the key. She fired right up and rand great. I let it warm up a little and then pushed the key and it wanted to die which tell me the valve is working. It would not do that before. This also explains why I had fuel dripping out the front of the motor when it was tilted. thanks for all the help.
