Ebay boat...but no title for trailer?

There is a boat for auction on ebay that fits my criteria.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Glastron-175-mercrusier-and-trailer

If the link doesn't work, if interested you could search Glastron 175.

Thing is, there is no title for the trailer. As a Canadian I don't think I can bring this (trailer) across the border? (I have to research this, unless someone can tell me)

Can Americans even licence a boat if they don't have a title? What is the procedure to get a title? How can you legally move this trailer? How does 'title' work?

Here it's a paper called a 'proof of ownership'. Basically stating the that current owner 'owns' the boat...duh....pretty obvious.

I'm bidding, but doubt I'll get it as I have to lowball it to make the trip worthwhile.

Thanks!

Link doesn't work. Depends on the state for the trailer procedure. I can imagine it would be pretty difficult to take an unregistered trailer across country borders.

Some states in the US do not issue trailer titles.
I would check with the Canada border people if a notarized bill of sale on the trailer would let you cross..
I know the state i am in a trailer with no title can only be used as a yard ornament...

For that size trailer, under 3000lbs, Wisconsin does not require title or registration. Hopefully a bill-of-sale will be enough for you to get it into Canada.

Ditto for IA...no title for a trailer that size here either.

Search Minn's DMV. I found out about Ga. that way.

The Reserve price in that auction is $2900. So if you thought you could get it for less than that, you dont even need to worry about the trailer.

Where is that stated? I thought it was hidden from bidders?

Actually I was thinking around $3000.

Looked into 'recovering' a title and the owner has to go in to do it....hmmm, seems like a slim shot.

In WI , where this boat is located, the boat and trailer registration requirements are very loose, but easy to work with if the owner is willing and able. Many boats are sold with an unregistered trailer under them . And the state does not necessarily require it either.

Contact the WI DNR if you are concerned. They are the ones who handle boat registration. I have No idea about bringing an unregistered trailer across the border that has been purchased.

If one reads the ad, it says that they do not have the title/ registration for the trailer, but no mention of the boat title. That being said, and seeing as the seller is a known entity (dealer), I bet that would have the info you need.

Thanks...thats good to know.

You are correct.

There is a clear title for boat, but NO title for trailer.

It's difficult getting answers from customs. I can call Canadian customs and get an answer, but US customs is extremely frustrating. BTW-I'm speaking from a long history of driving truck (7years) and crossing the border twice a week.

Just an update on this in case someone is doing a search....

First off, I'm going to retract my statement about how frustrating it is to work with customs. My recent experience was that both sides were friendly and helpful.

One does NOT need a title for trailer to cross the border into Canada. What you need is a bill of sale for the boat, and a separate bill of sale for the trailer. Reason for this is there is only GST on trailer, but GST/PST on boat.

Boat then is registered online and you pay $202 to have it inspected by Canadian Tire so it is proven that it falls into Canadian road standards. Then you can licence it.

Depends on how old the trailer is. If it is older than 15 years, then it is no problem in bring it in and licenece it, no Canadian Tire inspection needed. If trailer is newer than 15 years and has a proper VIN number then no problem, they will charge you at the border somewhere around $300 (RIV charge) and then taxes, and then $200 to CT for inspection when you license it. If it doesn't have a valid VIN and newer than 15 years - it will turn to nightmare to licence it in Canada, the RIV will give you really hard time in this case. Based upon my bad experience.

there was another post from a canadian who bought a escort trailor with no title and couldnt get across border. So im sure its same with you. You would have to prob have the owner apply for a title at his local dmv then sign it to you. Even thow they are not required you can still get one. i just went threw hell and hot water to get mine

Re: Ebay boat...but no title for trailer?

First of all.. I understand that there are some "set procedures" on teh Canada side for bringing in motorcycles & boats...Id check into that first..
I bought my unsed Lund boat in Wisconsin, the trailer came with a title.
When titling in Nebraska, the boat gets title transfered, but title does not, the trailer just gets registered. So I never needed the title...
Again check your customs...

I asked the seller of the boat and he told be the reserve was set at $2900. Never hurts to ask..

Re: Ebay boat...but no title for trailer?

You were right.

I bought the boat! Hopefully it works out...never spent $2900 on something unseen.

As far as the trailer goes, since the boat is being sold in Wisconsin I can licence it here in Manitoba without title since the trailer is less than 3000 lbs GVW. RIV at the border won't be a problem as it's nearly 20 years old.

Thanks for all the imput!
