I replacing the transom in a 63. 14" Dorsett MFG runabout. It has a 66 Chrysler/Seaking 50 hp outboard. The boat didn't have any braces on the transom and actually, it was barely glassed to the back of the boat. Should I put knee braces in their or would that be overkill. Also, I don't want to drill any holes into that transom. Would glueing them in with PL Premium be strong enough? Thanks

Re: Transom Brace?

I would say if lasted 46 years without a brace its not needed, but if you put one in it won't hurt anything. So I guess its up to you.

Re: Transom Brace?

For the second part, they just get glassed in at the same time you do the transom.

About a 2" wide brace right in the center would be good and very easy to install. You could use about 3 large stainless steel screws through the back of the transom into the brace and attach to hull/floor with the glue/glass/resin, so no screws through hull. Maybe use wood, cut it with a curve, and varnish it and it would be attractive as well. Good Luck!

I would do at least one layer of glass on the transom 1st, use PB for gluing then tab and glass everything.

My 1 1/2 cents, I'm still a newbie not allowed to have 2 cents yet :D

Good luck with your project
