Hey I'm looking to buy a fish finder/depth finder as a gift for my boating friend. I, unfortunately, know nothing about boats. Can someone please offer some suggestions on what to buy. The boat is 36 feet, and he uses it in the ocean, rivers and lakes. I'm looking to spend around $500. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

It depends upon the boat and the owner, but a $500 sounder would not likely be a good fit for most 36' boats. A gift card at his favorite marine store would be appreciated.

I agree with Pez.
I think getting the right Fish Finder is the hardest thing to buy for a boat.
It all depends on how deep you will be fishing and if it is Fresh Water or SaltWater.
Also is it a large flat mud and sand bottom or a very uneven rocky bottom with lots of drops offs.
Not something I would give as a gift as is a very hard decision and a very personal choice to find the right unit.
