Four winns 5.0gxi prop Stiletto or OEM Volvo penta

After reading for 2 days straight i got a pretty good picture of the prop that i need. My 2002 Four Winns Sundowner 205 with Volvo 5.0gxi-b 270HP and sx-m outdrive 1.60 gear ration, deep V haul and 3500lb with 2 people currently have the OEM Volvo penta aluminum 14.5x19 prop. Boat was running good until I spawn the hub. I do not remember the WOT RPM i was getting but as per the manual it should run in 4600-5000RPM at WOT. I am looking into buying a SS Stiletto 3 blade 14.25x21 at $249 or SS OEM Volvo penta 14.75x21 3 blades at $349. Stiletto is $100 cheaper. Also Stiletto is 1/2 inch smaller then the Volvo. I am moving 2 pitch up just so i can get a bit more top end. Is OEM really worth $100 more. Does anyone knows who makes Volvo Penta Props is it Volvo or someone else?

You should look at the Stiletto Bay Pro 4 blade version

You have to know the maximum RPM it was turning with the prop you have now, in order to deide on a new prop.

Thank you guys. I was not looking at a 4 blade because i wanted more top speed but will check that one out. The RPM was around 5000 i believe so i think i should be OK with the 21 pitch. I am leaning towards the Stiletto because of the cost and good reviews on this board. Will the diameter difference will play a role between these 2? Its 1/2inch from stiletto to volvo prop

Very good recommendation i think. I just red about it and i think i am buying it.

Just a thought - the difference in diameter is 1/4", not 1/2". That's 1/8" at the tip of each blade. If you're concerned with the extra 1/4" (1/8" per blade) you might look at the 14 1/2" 3 blade Stilettos.

I was comparing the volvo 14 3/4X21 3 blade to the 14 1/4X21 stiletto that's why i came up with the 1/2 inch. You are right comparing to my OEM it is only 1/4 inch. Well, I just ordered the 4 blade Stiletto Bay Pro II 14 1/4X20 as i really think after reading for 2 days on this forum i will spend most of my time not at top speed. I will post results as soon as i get it installed. If for some reason i do not like it i will replace it but let's hope it would not be necessary.

What was the original pitch...Stilletto have a lot of cupping it is not as simple as i had a 23p alum penta so a 21 SS will work..i have a 21 that grips more than a 23 That is the 21 is faster and lowers the rpm as much as the 23..

Original was 14 1/2X19 3 blades aluminum. So i moved from 19 to 20 pitch plus the 4 blades so i guess i might see up to 400rpm lower then before

As long as the rpms come out as expected I think you'll find the BP II to do everything you expect. Keep us posted, it's always nice to know how things end up.

Absolutely , Prop will be delivered this Wednesday and i will try to have it installed Friday. I will ask them to paint my outdrive also so it might take couple of days but i am excited to see it will turn up ) Will keep you guys posted

My boat is docked in front of my condo. I have no lift or Trailer. Now, I am a good swimmer but i doubt i can apply enough torque on the wrench and keep my head above water ) From the back of the boat is also tricky. Now if i had some air tools i can put a life jacket on and give it a go. I am due for maintenance, oil change and i want to paint the drive that's why i am taking it to a Marina that a friend of mine recommended. Now if you live around North Miami Beach and want to give it a go i will buy you a bottle of whatever you drink (whiskey,scotch, rum, Vodka,Gin,Wine, 12pack) and trow some franks on the grill. )

I've only changed out one prop, and I did it standing in the water, on the side of a river, with the motor trimmed all the way up.

I'll be in Miami in January...is that close enough?

January is Not even close. ))) Now going to a shallow water is the way to go. How hard is it to change it? I am afraid that rust or other obstacles can make it hard to change. My neighbor is a marine Mechanic and he said he will change it in front of the condo while the boat is in the water. So i hope by Friday to have ti installed and i will go out right away to test it.

Here are the results. I over propped the boat. I can reach 4200rpm but that is way too low. I had 600-800 rpm drop going from 19 to 20 pitch and from 3 to 4 blade. That is double of what i expected. Now i will go back to 19 pitch and 3 blade. Do you think that will put me back into the 4600-5000rpm range? I think it should. Time to sell this one on Ebay. I can see almost an inch gap between the outdrive and the stiletto prop. Wonder if this is normal?

The sx-m drive should have no gaps with a baypro prop. If you had a 19 to start with in alum prop... a 20 is far to aggresive it will act the same a 21p ss with agressive cupping.

Its hard to determine the proper pitched ss without knowing your rpm @ wot with the orignal prop...A WAG on a boat like that with 1.60 gears would be a 18 maybe a Solas titan HR series makes a 3 blade i doubt a 4 blade would put you @ your optimal rpm @ wot which is rev limited @4950.

Can you find a cheap 3 blade alum say a 19 and get your rpm and wot numbers..In the long run it will be well worth it...I might have a buyer for your old prop if they wont exchange for you

I will check craigslist. Let me know if you have a buyer.
I have to call manufacture and they are closed today as the place i bought it from do no stock inventory. I think 19pitch 3 blade should put me right where i want to be but i will try to find a prop as you suggested.
