Is it possible to convert a pull start to electric?

Hi, since this isn't a repair question but conversion, I guess this is the right place to ask....

If I pick up a used 2 stoke 25 hp outboard that is pull start can I convert it to an electric? Is this costly? I realize there are variables but assuming it is an 80's model Johnson what do you guys know? Much appreciated.

It is possible. WestMarine has a kit. I don't know if it'll fit your motor, but here it is:

You won't get any useful advice unless you tell us the make and model of your outboard, AZcamperguy.

Outboard dismantlers can supply "kits" of used parts for many outboards but they have to know the make and model number of the outboard.

I see. Problem is I haven't actually picked one up yet. I am looking at a few different ones so I don't have the proper info. This was more of a general question regarding difficulty and cost. Thanks for the input

Certainly can be converted to electric start.

I converted a 1992 9.9hp Evinrude to electric start a few years ago for my dad. The cost of buying the conversion kit was somewhere around $600 but with a little research I was able to identify and buy all the parts I needed (some new, some used) for about $200. The members here on iboats were a big help in sorting out any questions I had.

For reference, I needed a new flywheel, starter motor (of course), neutral safety switch, ignition switch/button, battery cables, starter solenoid and starter motor mounting bracket.

There are lots of exploded assy diagrams out there that will show exactly what is needed and how it all fits together. If you are generally handy around a motor then the conversion is simple.

Pretty much if the motor you are looking at came as an electric start option, this can be done. A good number of parts need to be changed over (see Moody Blue's post) and finding a dead donor would be the cheapest way to go.

See, I was thinking that might be the case ^^
I have a dead 20 hp Johnson with electric start. When I pick up a motor if it is recoil only I will investigate further. Thanks guys!

I converted a 30hp Nissan for about $100 buying used parts. Like mentioned above, check marine salvage places, local scrap metal yards and online auctions. You just have to be patient and search for the deals like I did.
