Ayuh,... Isn't that a tin boat,..??

Shoot-thru's can't be used in metal hulls,.. Only glass...

On my first read of his post, I thought that he was referring to a "through-hull" transducer, not a "shoot through".

Well I don't know where your from, but it says right in the HDS5 Lowrance book that it will work on aluminun or glass boats for thru hull !!!!!

Difference in terminology.

Yes, it will work with a "thru hull" transducer (transducer sticking out of a hole in the bottom of the boat). It will not work with a "shoot thru" transducer (transducer mounted inside boat shooting thru the hull).

FWIW: Thru hull transducers can be very tricky to mount. Most require a fairing block attached to the bottom of the hull to mount the transducer perpendicular to the bottom.

On the Airmar tilted element transducer (B60-XX) they tilted the element inside the housing. This way you don?t need a fairing block and you basically end up with a flush mount transducer. The downside is that they require a fairly large hole (2 3/8" dia) and are relatively expensive at $225 a pop. I have a the B164-20 (1kW version) on my boat and I can?t say enough about how well it performs.

Ayuh,... Sorry, I guess I misread your question...

You can mount it ANYWHERE in the hull where it'll see "Clean" water,+ it won't disrupt the flow to the motor....

It is easy to confuse the basic types of transducers simply due to the semantics used to do so. Oftentimes we know exactly what we are explaining; however, that explanation is easily interpreted much differently. We describe the basic transducers:http://www.sternmate.com/Types-of-Transducers-Described.html

Ok---Thanks for the info. I didn't think about thru hull and shoot thru till you brought it up. I was concerned about the turbulance from the off-set of the bottom. I guess I'll try it right on the bottom of transom and hope for the best
The HDS5 isn't a cheap unit, so was very concerned about where to install it.
Thanks Jerry
